| Encourage Dads, Grandfathers & Older Brothers to Read to Children |
|
In the U.S., girls usually score better than boys on reading tests and are less likely to be in remedial reading classes. But the same is not true in other countries.
Why? Some think it may be because in the U.S., mothers do most of the reading to their children. One way to encourage boys to read more is by having older males (dads, grandfathers, older brothers and friends) read to and with them. That provides an important role model for boys.
Below are some tips to help build reading skills:
- As you're reading, stop every now and then. Ask questions. Talk about the pictures, too.
- Look for words that start with the same letter.What sound does 'l' make? 'M'?
- Have your child act out a story after you've read it. This is a good way to see whether he understands what he's read.

Annual Peer Leaders Uniting Students Summit at the University of the Pacific.

Stagg Sings With 400 Voices
|
The March Stagg Choir was an outstanding success this year, with 400 students participating, including both Stagg singers and a group from the new Public Safety Academy located on the Stagg campus.
The singers gave a 75-minute performance featuring the music of Queen, Journey, the Beatles, Lauren Hill, David Bowie and Nat King Cole. Led by Stagg's music teachers, Mark Swope and Joe Updegraff, the troupe's brought the house down.
Swope and Updegraff have been working collaboratively to create a stronger music program for the Delta Kings, and it is paying off, with greater participating, much deeper enthusiasm and some wonderful results.
"We are a strong SUSD music program working together and supporting each other," Swope said. "We are very proud of this year's program ...and this event."

Kohl and Walton Share a Day in the Dirt

Kohl Elementary and Walton Special Center celebrated their 13th Annual Day in the Dirt this month, commemorating the day Kohl School moved in next door to Walton and the two programs launched an extraordinary partnership.
Kohl named the event "Day in the Dirt" because the first day the schools met Kohl School was still a pile of dirt being moved to build the new school. Kohl students and staff had walked over to check out their new site and Walton students and staff greeted them with welcome signs.
The schools bonded and since Kohl students have shared activities and memories with the special needs students at Walton. Principals Bud West and Tom Whitesides agree that both schools benefited significantly from the relationship.
Day in the Dirt started out this year as always with walkers and runs along the Calaveras River, with student pushing wheelchairs and helping those with walkers navigate the trail. University of the Pacific Men's Water Polo and Women's Track team members volunteered to help with the Walton students and cheer on the many events of the day.
This year the "Advocates" a band composed of members of the city's Special Adult Program performed at the school outdoor amphitheater and had the students rocking. There was a picnic, games, art and the great interaction between the schools.
The Record photographer Calixtro Romias recorded the day's events and interviewed two Kohl students who said the annual event reminds the students at both schools that "we are like family." Kohl student Malik Cotta, 13, helped Walton students on the morning 5k run. "It's a good experience for them and for us to push them. I'm glad we had this!"

PLA Celebrates Law Day With Local Attorneys
|
Pacific Law Academy celebrated Law Day this year with a host of speakers, led off by Moses Zapien, a former member of both the Stockton City Council and the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors and currently chairman of the Community Foundation of San Joaquin, the area's largest philanthropic organization.
Zapien was joined by longtime San Joaquin County Deputy District Attorney Stephen Taylor who talked about his experiences prosecuting White Collar crimes, including securities fraud cases, and violent predators, among other crimes. He shared training law clerks through law school and onto post graduate bar candidacy. Taylor is a graduate of the Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco.
Other speakers included Cuca Rosing, who works as a crime victim advocate in the San Joaquin District Attorney's Office, Sherri Adams, Chief Deputy San Joaquin County District Attorney, Joel Blank, professor of political science at San Joaquin Delta College, Hope Dunsing, also a victims of crime advocate, Carl Douglas, a marketing analyst, Chaplain Kevin White, Compass Bank Vice President Jeanie Irvin.

Dads, Donuts and D.I.Y. Projects
On Saturday, March 4, 2017, the Parent/Community Empowerment Department partnered with Home Depot once again for an exceptional "Dads, Donuts and D.I.Y. Projects" event. Over 135 dads and their children, presenting 23 various elementary schools come out to build, paint and personalize their very own rain gauge. Dads and their children worked together in sync to hammer, nail and paint their way to the finished product. The smiles and excitement on the children faces were priceless! We look forward to hosting another successful father engagement event.
Family Literacy Night
The Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) in conjunction with the Parent/Community Empowerment Department hosted Family Literacy Night
at Barnes & Noble. Over 250 families enjoyed special guest readers and free activities!

In the RAD classes, parents learn how to:
- Make an Academic Success Plan to be sure their student graduates from high school prepared to go on to college.

- Encourage good homework and study skills.
- Communicate effectively with their student.
- Establish and maintain firm, fair and consistent discipline.
- Make sure their student develops excellent reading skills ... and more!

Open House Celebrates SUSD Police- and Spring!
The SUSD Police Department held its annual spring open house for the community this week, providing children's Easter egg hunts, crafts and face- painting, a toy raffle, and dinner for staff and guests.
Interim chief Anne Brewer led tours of the department, housed at the former St. Agnes School at Park and San Joaquin Streets, and the District's Emergency Services vehicle. But the hits of the evening were of course Luke and Yoda, SUSD's drug sniffing dogs. Luke, an English springer spaniel, and Yoda, a Jack Russell Terrier, showed off their skills with their handlers and then posed for photos with the kids.
On hand for the event were the Public Safety Academy cadets, sharing their popular program with promising students and interested families. PSA opened last year on the Stagg High School campus for 5th through 8th graders interested in safety focused careers, such as fire, law enforcement and emergency services.
Chief Brewer and the team gave special recognition to SUSD Officer Adam Alejo Havens for his heroic and successful effort to prevent a suicide in December. Officer Havens was doing late night rounds in a school parking lot when he noticed a car not authorized to be there. He took precautions to approach the car safely, discovered what was about to happen and was able to diffuse the situation and convince the adult individual in the car to seek help.
And she swore in the department's newest Lieutenant, Stephanie Scofield, who comes to SUSD with significant education and training as well as experience with a variety of law enforcement agencies, including POST, California's police standards unit. Congratulations Officer Havens for his high standards of performance and to Lieutenant Scofield!
The SUSD Police Department holds two open houses a year, one for Halloween trick-or-treaters and the spring event.

Kindergarten Roundup is Here!
Stockton Unified School District is proud to announce that Kindergarten Registration time is here for the 2017-18 school year! Transitional Kindergarten students (birthday falls between September 2nd and December 2nd of 2012) will also be registered at this time.

The following documents will be required to complete registration for both Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten students:
▪ Your child's original immunization record. The school will make a copy of the record and return it to you.
▪ Your child's physical ex
amination record. The examination must be conducted within the last six months prior to the start of school. Thus your child's physical exam must be dated February 8th 2017 or later.
▪ Your child's oral health examination record. Your child must have received an oral health examination 12 months prior to entering school. Thus your child's oral health examination must be dated August 8th 2016 or later.
▪ Your child's proof of birth. The school will make a copy of the official birth certificate, other documents such as baptismal records and hospital records may be acceptable.
▪ Proof of residence. The school will need proof that you reside within its attendance area. We prefer a utility bill with your home address listed (e.g. PG&E bill).
IMPORTANT NOTE: Your registration will not be complete until all documents have been submitted.
Under California law, all kindergarten students registering for the 2017 -2018 school year must be age 5 by September 1st, 2017. Students born between September 2, 2012 and December 2, 2012 are eligible to attend transitional kindergarten at designated transitional kindergarten sites.
