Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year
Letter from Interim Superintendent Brian Biedermann
|
|
Dear Stockton Unified staff, students, families, and community,
It is my honor and privilege to serve as Interim Superintendent of Stockton Unified School District. I look forward to continuing our mission of ensuring all SUSD students graduate college, career, and community ready.
I want to begin by thanking each and every family for supporting their child throughout the pandemic. I know the transition to distance learning this past March was difficult, and I applaud our students, families, and staff for their flexibility, resilience, and for working together to manage such a challenging endeavor.
One of the many lessons reaffirmed by the pandemic is that we are stronger together. Despite our inability to physically come together, we saw record-high participation from students and families, resulting in better-informed decisions in our pandemic response. This is incredibly encouraging, and I implore you to continue collaborating with us. As my team and I begin developing plans for returning to school in the fall, we will once again look to you for input so that we can make the best decision for our students and schools, together. Please look for this survey on our website and social media.

The 2019-2020 school year was unlike any other, but together, we rose to meet the challenge of a global pandemic.
We served on, we connected on, we taught on, we celebrated on, and now SUSD, it's time to mask on!
Welcome to the 2020-2021 school year!

Small Acts, Big Change: Reimagining Teaching and Learning
|
|
As we Kick Off the 2020 school year, we will focus on our theme of "small acts, BIG Change: Re-imagining Teaching and Learning"
In the words of Howard Zinn, “Small acts, when multiplied by millions of people, can transform the world.” While we know that our world will never be the same following this global pandemic and plight for social justice, we in Stockton Unified have a unique opportunity to reimagine what teaching and learning look like.
Every one of our employees plays a significant role in this process as we are all in the business of teaching and learning no matter where our vantage point lies. As we venture into the 20-21 school year, we must commit to our mission of graduating every student college, career, and community ready. In doing so, we lift all youth out of circumstances of poverty and scarcity.
It will take all 5200 employees working with our stakeholders to make this a reality.
Below you will also find a short video depicting the story of the Chinese Bamboo Tree, a small act that leads to big change.
We wish you an amazing year!

Announcement: Technology Access for All SUSD Families
|
|
Stockton Unified is pleased to announce that the District has ordered one WiFi-enabled Hotspot for every SUSD household to ensure that all students can participate in distance learning. The devices will begin arriving toward the end of August and early September. Your child’s school will contact you when the device is available for pickup. Until then, we are encouraging all students who are still in need of WiFi access to utilize the hotspot function available on some cell phones, or to take advantage of the free WiFi options that some internet providers are offering. Information regarding these options has been posted to all school websites, and can also be viewed at www.stocktonusd.net/TechAccess.
Please reach out to your student’s school with any technology concerns and questions.
Thank you for your patience and support as we work to get our entire community connected during distance learning.

Accessing Free E-Books and Audiobooks from Home
|
|
District Librarian Mary Ann Pafford created a homemade video for families, students and teachers teaching them how to access e-books and audiobooks through SORA from home.
The SORA collection is an extension of our physical libraries, only it’s online with 24/7 access to ebooks and audiobooks. It’s convenient for students to check out titles at home with no worry about misplacing a book or running up late fees – these digital titles automatically return at the end of the lending period!
Digital books are compatible with smartphones, tablets, eReaders, and computers. All you need to get started is an internet connection and your SUSD Google account. Access SORA in your browser by visiting soraapp.com/library/stocktonca or download the Sora app and use the setup code stocktonca. Note: Students must be logged into their District Google account to access SORA.
We encourage all students to visit our digital library to become familiar with how it works and browse our current catalog. Please contact Mary Ann Pafford, District Librarian at mpafford@stocktonusd.net with questions.

Parent Tip: Support and Promote Learning at Home
|
|
Elementary School Families:
- Give your child a daily responsibility to carry out.
- Establish a study area, and a daily time for learning.
- Ask your child open-ended questions that promote thinking: What if people had no hands? How many ways can you think of to make learning more fun?
- Help your child draw maps. Let your child hide something and draw a map for you to find it.
- Play listening games, like Simon Says.
- Give your child step-by-step instructions. Gradually increase the number of steps.
- Get out old clothes for costumes and act out favorite stories.
- Establish a family reading time.
Secondary School Families:
- Have your teen establish a study area and a daily time for learning.
- Encourage your teen to set learning goals.
- Suggest that your teen keep a journal of the events of this time and her thoughts about them.
- Ask your teen open-ended questions that promote thinking: What would be the downside to being famous? If you could start your own charity, what would it do?
- Have your teen teach you something you don't know. Ask him to explain a biology concept he's learned recently, or to show you how to solve a tricky math problem.
- Establish a daily family reading time.
- Have your teen tackle a long-term project. It's great to be able to start something just because it's interesting when there's no time pressure.
- Suggest that your teen reread this year's class notes.
- Have your teen work some math problems every day.
- Allow your teen some time for daydreaming. Imagining different situations and how they might handle them makes it easier for teens to face challenges.
