Thank you for the support

It has been a busy and intense time the last couple of weeks for our community.  Although it has been hectic, the stress of this time has been lightened by the support of so many earnest and wonderful people.  We have an incredible school community here, and our staff has been inspired by the support of our families and friends.  You have encouraged us, and you have spoken out to draw attention to the situation.  The silver lining of this experience has clearly been that, when the chips were down, the depth of our relationships became very apparent.

Thank you to all who have lended their energy for our cause.  Thank you for packing the VUSD board room three times, and to all of those who spoke on our behalf, including 3 of our scholars, alumni Kole Devereaux and current students Polly Moore and Zoe Mishler: your voices mattered.  We are inspired by the way you exemplified the SVA mission and vision statements.

Please continue to have faith in the process.  We are confident that these schools will not only exist, but that they will do great work in our community and be a part of making Visalia a more viable, thriving place to live.  We know firsthand the power of what we provide because we see how our scholars grow and evolve over time and we know their well-being has a ripple effect on our families and community.  We are eager to increase access to this model of education while continually improving our program.

Please also know that during this time, our Superintendent and Board are attending to the details and will protect what we have, while our instructional and support staff continue to attend to serving children.  We will not be distracted or detoured from our mission or our vision, and we know that:

"Many things we need can wait. The child cannot. Now is the time his bones are formed, his mind developed. To him we cannot say tomorrow, his name is today."  -Gabriela Mistral

Our eyes are on our scholars.  We have a vision to realize and we will get there.  Thank you for your support.  Every word, every hug, every fist bump, and every repost has made a difference.  We will get there, and we will keep you posted along the way.

Enjoy a restful weekend!
Ruth

We're Focused Schoolwide on Math

Several of our teachers have been part of an excellent training series this year with Stanford Professor and mathematics education superstar Jo Boaler. They have been sharing what they've learned with the rest of the staff through collaborative Math Meetings, developing our whole staff to teach math in exciting ways which align with the latest brain research about how we learn.  Check out  this Scientific American article on the latest in math education  in the US.

This three minute video on number sense offers a look at how we strive to teach math at SVA.

Jo Boaler will be speaking at the Visalia Fox Theater on  December 5  from  6:30-8:00PM. The presentation, Help Children Love and Learn Maths, is geared toward parents . The event is free, but you must pre-register.  We'll keep you posted on how to register when that information becomes available.
