Enrollment Projections for Blue Oak Academy

Are you planning to return to SVA next year?

The admissions window for 2017-18 begins on December 12, 2016.  Due to this, it is time to re-enroll for the next school year. Continuing  students' seats will be preserved with the proper and timely completion  of this form. Preference in new admissions is given to the siblings of  currently enrolled students whenever possible. A sibling is defined as  a child living in the same home and sharing the same legal guardian.

Please check your child's backpack or folders for a green "Reenrollment Form" today.  You'll notice that this year's form includes our proposed new school, Blue Oak Academy which will open for grades K-2 in the fall. Your completion of this form is required by December 12 , and will help us prepare for our lottery in February.  Please return the form to your child's teacher by the deadline! 5 EASY Ways to Support Your School
This Holiday Season
1. Give PTO Party Train Tickets
Many of the parties will be held in the spring, making party tickets a great holiday gift for anyone on your list. Purchase tickets here

2. Shop for Groceries and Shop Online with eScrip
eScrip has replaced the Save Mart SHARES program. Sign up here to register your phone number and/or your Save Mart Rewards Card with eScrip. Save Mart will donate 3% of your purchases to our school.

By signing up for eScrip, you can also shop online and earn for your school at hundreds of retailers you already use. You DO NOT have to register a card to use eScrip online. Start your online shopping at shopping.escrip.com, sign in to shop and receive special offers and earn cash for SVA!

3. Shop Online with Amazon Smile
Amazon donates 0.5% of the purchase price to Sycamore Valley Academy when you start your shopping at smile.amazon.com.

Bookmark the link  https://smile.amazon.com/ch/37-1638700
and support us every time you shop.

4. Shop Online with Mixed Bag

School policy regarding mobile devices and cameras remains in effect (they must be kept out of sight at all times).  Students may request to use their phone to call home, but prior approval is required as it is during all school events.  Staff will be acting as photographers at the dance.

Students may wear any colors they wish and are not required to wear a collared shirt. All other dress code policies are in effect including skirt length, heel height, too baggy/too tight, etc.
Knitting Club

Knitting Club with  Mrs. Lewis is up and running ! The club is open to all 5th-8th grade students and meets in room 15 on Tuesdays, 3:30-4:30.  Contact Katrina Lewis for more information.
Lost and Found

Please remember to check the lost and found regularly for your items. The next drop off at the rescue mission will occur on  December 16 , the last day before winter break.

If your child's name is legibly written on an item, it will be taken to their classroom...if there's no name to be found it will be donated.

Please check at home to be sure the items you have (like green SVA hoodies) belong to you. It's easy for students to mix them up at school.

Dress Code Reminder

Please take a moment to look over our dress code policy. Some common infractions we are seeing frequently include blue shirts and jackets with patterns or in colors other than those approved in the dress code shown below. Thanks for your support in this matter.

Parent Support
Welcome to our new Parent Support section. To help achieve the intended outcome for families articulated in our Strategic Plan, we will be offering a series of informational resources to help support you in the often challenging, yet infinitely rewarding task of parenting.
Growth Mindset

Staff and students at SVA receive explicit instruction and modeling of how to develop a growth mindset. Growth mindset is the core belief that abilities are malleable rather than fixed and is based on new insight on the structural, physical effects of learning on the brain (Dweck, 2006).

In contrast, in a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intellect or aptitude, are simply fixed traits. They believe that talent or inherent ability alone creates success. When students and educators have a growth mindset, they understand that intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work.

Understanding that intelligence is not a fixed characteristic and that all people share potential for learning and growth will help you support your children as they grapple with academic challenges.

This documentary chronicles the rarely told narratives of Gypsy survivors of Nazi persecution in Romania as they remember their experiences during WWII in the context of their lives today.

During WWII, Gypsies were slated alongside Jews and other populations for extermination. In each country occupied or allied with Nazi Germany, their fate was similar. Nearly 500,000 are supposed to have perished due to systematic extermination, forced marches, starvation, exposure, diseases, and abuses.

The Gypsies' experience critically altered their lives. Survivors share with viewers their shocking deportation from Romania to camps where they fought to survive by any means necessary. Hidden Sorrows reveals the continued struggle of Gypsies for equality in a society that views them as second-class citizens. It examines the present impoverishment of the survivors and their descendants as well as discrimination facing them daily.
