From Summer to Fall

It has been a chaotic past four months as we had to move to our new office, say good-bye to some dear friends, and organize some pretty amazing events!

Announcements!

We said good-bye to Gary Aggas at the October SVANC Board meeting. Gary has served on the board for over 8 years and has held all of the executive board positions (but not at once!) We thank him for his years of dedicated service to our community!

We also wished CD6 Field Deputy Caesar Huerta good luck as he resigned from his CD6 post to take on a new LA City job. We thank him for his amazing work for our community as he battled some pretty tough projects. We also welcome Caroline Menjivar who is taking over that position.
SVANC Town Hall
on the
CA. High Speed Rail

We welcomed the CA. High Speed Rail Authority to speak at our Town Hall meeting held Oct. 9th. The Southern CA. Regional Director, Michelle Boehm with Project Manager Juan Carlos Velasquez and Engineer Rick Simon explained the project and how the recently selected SR14 route will travel through Sun Valley. Presenting the non-support side of CA. HSR was SVANC HSR Committee member Susan Lustig. To learn about the project and especially how it affects Sun Valley, please go to svanc.com/hsr.php. We welcome Sun Valley residents or business owners to join us at our HSR committee meetings. You can be reminded of any of our committee or board meetings by signing-up HERE .

We especially thank Principal Jonathan Tiongco, the staff and students of Alliance MIT school for hosting this event. We are very grateful for their hospitality and assistance!
Sun Valley Rec. Center Playground Ribbon Cutting

There was a lot of excitement at the ribbon cutting of the new playground just opened at Sun Valley Recreation Center. SVANC was happy to be part of this great occasion as CD6 Councilmember Nury Martinez cut the ribbon. Sun Valley Recreation Center is located at 8133 Vineland Ave.
Another Dedication! Traffic Signal at Allegheny St.
CD6 Councilmember Nury Martinez was joined by Principal Jonathan Tiongco and the students, parents & staff of Alliance MIT school at the dedication of a very important traffic light at the intersection of Allegheny St. and San Fernando Rd. Several schools are in this area, and the traffic light is critical for helping to protect the students as they commute to the schools.

LAPD Foothill Division Open House

SVANC was pleased to take part in the LAPD Foothill Division's Open House that was held Sept. 22. Newly appointed to the Foothill Division, Captain Grimes came over to visit our booth, which was hosted by President Cindy Sower & First VP, Monica Vacas. There was free food, music, and many great informational booths, including guided tours of the precinct.

National Night Out 2018
SVANC helped celebrate National Night Out held August 7th in the Sun Valley community of Glencrest Hills. It was a great opportunity for some of our elected officials and our LAPD to get to talk one-on-one with the community.
Last but not least, Movies in the Park 2018!
Our first of the season "Movies in the Park 2018" was June 29th showing "Despicable Me3" and was at DeGarmo park. On July 20th at Fernangeles Park we had a fun night watching "Ferdinand the Bull."

Between the two events and despite blowing fuses, forgetting cups, spilling popcorn oil we popped over 300 cups of popcorn, distributed over 400 hot dogs, oodles of cups of lemonade, over a hundred lollipops, over 300 bottles of water (it was HOT!) and more smiles than anyone could count! We even had a surprise visit from our new Assemblymember Luz Rivas. We especially thank our boardmembers for leading the kids & parents in some great exercises and playing some great tunes!

We thank our co-sponsors; the staffs of Councilmembers Nury Martinez & Paul Krekorian, the LAPD & the Foothill Division LAPD Cadets, Congressman Tony Cardenas, Republic Services, SA Recycling.

Second Tuesday of every month, we are HERE!
We love to hear from those of you who live and/or work in Sun Valley. We encourage you to be a part of our meetings. The Neighborhood Council system was established to give the residents and businesses easier access to voice their opinions and identify problem areas in our communities.

We are always joined by either our elected officials (Council Members of CD2 and CD6, our LAUSD board member, state assembly & state senate) or their representatives with whom SVANC works hand and hand to assess and plan how to make Sun Valley better. We also get a report concerning our area from the Sr. Lead Officers of the LAPD and from the LAFD when they are not called out on an emergency.

The Friday or Saturday before our meeting we send out an agenda of topics ( sign-up here! ) that will be covered in that upcoming Tuesday meeting. You always have the opportunity to voice your opinion or ask questions on any of those agenda items as well as speak on non-agenda items - you only have to fill out a speaker card. All committee meetings are open to the community also... View Committee Meetings Here!

Our next meeting is November 13th. Get involved and hear what is going on in our local government and in our communities. See you then!
