Community News -June

“To sit on the front steps — whether it’s a veranda in a small town or a concrete stoop in a big city — and to talk to our neighborhoods is infinitely more important than to huddle on the living-room lounger and watch a make-believe world in not-quite living color.”

~ Harvey Milk

“Any man can be a father, but it takes someone special to be a dad.”

We hope all the Dads in our community had a fantastic day while being celebrated!

THEY WON SOME PRIZES WHILE TAKING CARE OF THEIR HEALTH, AND SO CAN YOU!

JUNE IS NATIONAL MEN'S HEALTH MONTH

HOW TO OBSERVE IT

Tweak your diet

  • This is an excellent opportunity to change the way you eat. Cut back on alcohol this month, or increase your intake of healthy fermented foods like sauerkraut and kefir. You can do anything for a month, and if you do it for a month, you can do it for life!

Set some goals

  • You can use this month to take stock of your health and consider where you want it to be. Do you want to lose weight? Gain muscle? Simply eat more vegetables? Set small and achievable goals and work with your doctor to make them a reality.

Get educated

  • Take this opportunity to read about the common health issues specific to men and how to prevent yourself from getting hurt! Check out the CDC for information on health issues that men face.

June is PRIDE MONTH!

~What does LGBTQ+ refer to?

As an umbrella term, LGBTQ+ includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people. Note that more sexualities can feature under the LGBTQ+ umbrella, hence the use of the plus symbol (for example, intersex people, pansexualityasexuality, and people who are questioning their sexuality/gender identity).

The LGBTQ+ umbrella is inclusive of many different sexualities and gender identities. So too, are there many ways we can ensure LGBTQ+ people are supported and included in our workplace.

Unfortunately, many LGBTQ+ people experience mental health struggles. The bisexual, transgender, and younger members communities have the highest rates of mental health concerns within the LGBTQ+ population.

FACTS ABOUT LGBTQ POPULATION AND MENTAL HEALTH

  • 4.5 % Of the population identifies as lesbian, gay or bisexual.
  • Of those, over 39% reported having a mental health illness. That is nearly 5.8 million people. (More than the entire population in Kentucky!)

Everyone has a sexual orientation and gender identity. Sexual orientation is who you are romantically or physically attracted to. Gender identity is the internal sense of being male, female, both or neither, which is separate from your biological sex.

Most LGBTQ+ individuals are resilient and can thrive in the face of adversity with the help of supportive families, communities, and peers. In fact, one study found that LGBTQ+ people used mental health services at 2.5 times higher rates than their heterosexual counterparts.

Thank you for investing in health for Sonoma Valley children, families, and seniors.

Sonoma Valley Community Health Center has been on the front lines, providing care to our community since 1992. Low-wage jobs, minimal health benefits, and high living cost mean too many of our neighbors lack access to affordable health care. SVCHC spends approximately $1 million each year on providing care to our patients who are under or uninsured. Thanks to generous, community-minded people like you, we can ensure that all of our neighbors have access to quality care.
