Vincentian Reflection for the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ the King

November 20, 2022

Gospel: (Luke 23: 35-43) The rulers sneered at Jesus and said, “He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Christ of God.” Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine they called out, “If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself.” Above him there was an inscription that read, “This is the king of the Jews.” Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, “Are you not the Christ? Save yourself and us. The other, however, rebuking him said in reply, “…we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal.” Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus replied to him, “Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

Reflection: On this last Sunday of the liturgical year, we celebrate Christ’s kingship. The notion of “king” can conjure up images of power, wealth, and self-serving rule. But here we have a King who has no power and wealth; his throne is a cross, and his rule is suffering and death. Would we be like the thief crucified with Jesus who wishes Jesus to abuse his power to save himself and them? Or would we be like the thief who recognizes his own sinfulness and Jesus’ goodness? Jesus demonstrates his kingship not by saving himself but by saving others. The reign of God is not in power but in mercy. The cross is where we least expect a king to be. Yet this is how God’s kingdom is established and where our discipleship begins. Jesus demonstrates his kingship not by power but by loving reassurance that Paradise awaits faithful disciples. (Living Liturgy, p. 252)

Vincentian Meditation: Devotion to Christ the King means loving those people whom, when He was a king on earth, Jesus liked to have close about Him - the poor. Devotion to Christ the King means loving and being servants of the poor in the way and in the spirit with which Jesus served them when He was on earth. Devotion to Christ the King means opposing and rejecting violence in all its forms. Devotion to Christ the King means working for peace and reconciliation in our society, for His kingdom is one of love and justice and peace. (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p.569)

How are we showing our devotion to Christ the King?

Do we engage the poor, the humble, the hardened, the marginalized with love as Christ our King did?

Are we messengers of His hope?

Your Formation and Training Opportunities & Tips

Catholic Teaching in Focus: Have you ever wondered how the principle of subsidiarity might look when meeting with a neighbor during a Home Visit? The idea of subsidiarity, simply put, means listening and equipping the person/people closest to a situation with the means to tackle it themselves. While we respect the decision of a Vincentian on a call to decide how to help, asking neighbors where do you wish to go from this point forward, what is the life you wish to live and what do you need to get there are all means of supporting a neighbor in a way that lives the principle out, guiding them to where they need to be. The Home Visit is always more than simply the immediate need, it’s about the life-long journey with the person before us, guiding and supporting them on that path towards true and lasting joy whether that means through our direct assistance or connecting them to other, more specialized resources to support that journey.

++++++++++++

On the subject of Home Visits, you deserve a shout out! In our FY2022, you grew our total Home visits from approx 1,000 in Q2 to approx 1,200 in Q3, to approx 1,400 in Q4 ended 9/30/2022. Awesome - we are trending back toward our pre-COVID volume - great for our neighbors, great for our Vincentians!

++++++++++++

We've lightened up on our formation offerings for the remainder of 2022 so you can focus on the holidays for your neighbors and yourselves. Watch for news of your 2023 formation & training opportunities.

Sharing the Warmth

After a beautiful, warm, colorful fall, winter cold is here! Our Cincinnati District Council launched our annual Coat Drive while it was warm...and, candidly, our winter coat donations have lagged. Our media partners, WLWT and Warm 98.5, are sharing this news with our community: We are collecting new and gently used coats to share with our neighbors in need and encourage local parishes, schools, businesses, and other organizations to host coat collections in support of this effort. Gold Star Chili has joined with us for another year of partnership and is providing a coney coupon for those who choose to donate financially through https://GoldStarChili.com .

How can your Conference and you participate in sharing warmth with our neighbors this year?

  • Host a coats drive at your parish or school - contact Alec Jewell at 513.345.4983 or ajewell@svdpcincinnati.org for info, to schedule, and to make arrangements for logistical support (barrels & pick-ups). 13 Conferences have already stepped up to host drives now and in the coming weeks. It's not too late for you to join them - you need to act now!
  • Donate coats, gloves, mittens, scarves, and caps hiding in your closet
  • Promote our coat drives and distribution events in your parish and community
  • Volunteer for one of our coat distribution events near your neighborhood - help with paperwork if you prefer to sit; share a smile with a neighbor who you help find just the coat they were hoping for
  • Extend winter coat vouchers to neighbors who have not received a coat this year, after our distribution events have concluded

More info:

We will host 3 Coat Distribution events:

  • This Sat, 11/19, 9am – noon, @ Elder High School (Price Hill)
  • Sat, 12/3, 9am – noon, @ CCPA Middle School gym (West End)
  • Wed, 12/7, 5 – 8pm, @ Clippard YMCA (Colerain/Groesbeck/Mt Healthy)

Beginning Mon, 12/12, Our Conferences and NOC staff will have the ability to issue winter coat vouchers to neighbors who have not yet received 2022 winter coat assistance from SVDP; these vouchers will be redeemable @ our CHRC in the Liz Carter Center (LCC, 1125 Bank St) or @ any of our SVDP thrift stores.

Please contact our Conferences Support team - Olivia Scheper at 513.345.4986 or oscheper@svdpcincinnati.org ; Alec Jewell (see above); or Tom Roberts at 513.345.4910 or troberts@svdpcincinnati.org - to warm 2 hearts (your neighbor's and yours) and the whole body this season.

Beacons of Light and Conference Good Works

We have a handful of Conferences actively engaged in inviting prospective Vincentians to explore our vocation. Your Conferences Support team can help your Conference with recruiting displays and brochures, as well as suggestions to increase your visibility and your fellow parishioners' awareness of your many good works. Wouldn't you love to share the Vincentian gift with others seeking to more fully live their faith? Couldn't your Conference's impact grow if your Vincentian circle expanded? 'Tis the season to give!

++++++++++++

How is your Conference radiating Christ and evangelizing within your Family of Parishes?

We are eager to share your story here in our Conference News and Notes. You may inspire action among your fellow Vincentians, parishioners, and neighbors. Sharing your fires of faith - isn't this what evangelizing is all about?

++++++++++++

St. Vincent de Paul's own words invite us to be creative to infinity. We witnessed a shining example this past weekend.

River City East Sports Complex hosted a Canned Food Drive softball tournament to benefit our Our Lady of the Rosary/St Matthias and Our Lady of the Valley Conferences' food pantries and food assistance. This is the eighth year River City East has closed their fall season with this benefit event. 70+ teams registered to play; it grows every year. Each participating player donates at least 4 canned goods. Please remember the previous weekend was warm enough for shorts. Well, this past weekend was too...as long as you covered them with multiple layers. Our first snowfall and muddy infields could not discourage the teams (both men & coed) who competed on 4 adjacent fields from early morning until late night. (And they kept the bartenders inside pretty busy when they weren't on the field.) The yield: a whole lot of laughs and friendly competition; more than 7 vehicles filled with food that our Conferences' neighbors will appreciate throughout the coming year (the picture below captures only a small portion of the harvest) - the players even helped load the food into our vehicles; and over $3,600 in financial donations that will fund assistance in the months ahead...when presumably the softball gloves are awaiting some spring sunshine.

Huge thanks to OLR/St Matthias Vincentian Jane Weber, her family and friends; to Jim DeSalvo, OLR/St Matthias Conference President; our wonderful hosts @ River City East; and the teams and players who remind us that there is joy in sharing & caring at any age. We are all in this together.

Conference Days to Shop Angel Toys for Your Neighbors

As is our traditional arrangement, we have designated the days beginning Tuesday, 12/13, for Conferences to make reservations with Tom Roberts, 513.345.4910 or troberts@svdpcincinnati.org , to shop our remaining Angel Toys in our Neyer Outreach Center (NOC). Please note that this is subject to availability of toys and gifts. 8 Conferences have booked appointments for Tues, 12/13, or Wed, 12/14, thus far. If your Conference wants to participate, book now! Reminder: this is for Conference members only shopping for identified neighbors for whom the Conference will enter this assistance extended in CMS.

A Seasonal Tip from our Social Services Team

Heating costs are going to be higher this winter - here's a tip to help our neighbors reduce their costs:

As you are working with neighbors regarding their Duke bill, be sure to look at the full bill; page 4 will show if a third party supplier is on the bill along with their billing rates. It will also shows the comparable rate for Duke. Most times their third party rate is higher and the neighbor can save some money by having that removed. They can call Duke and ask to have it removed.

For more information on helping a neighbor read their bill visit Reading Your Utility Bill - Duke Energy (duke-energy.com) . Neighbors may also need get on PIPP Plus to help them pay their bills to learn more about PIPP Plus visit Percentage of Income Payment Plan - Duke Energy (duke-energy.com) .

More Resources for our Conferences and Neighbors

Conference Assistance Fund (CAF)

  • You submitted 92 fresh applications
  • We approved 146 applications (many carried over from Sept) totaling $64,685 and declined 0
  • You withdrew 8 applications

And for November to-date:

  • You've submitted 88 fresh applications
  • We've approved 87 applications and declined 0
  • We have 41 applications currently in process

You can check on the status of CAF applications you have submitted by going to the Member Support and Forms page of our SVDP-Cincinnati website and clicking on CAF Application Status, or use this link:

https://app.powerbi.com/view?r=eyJrIjoiNjQyZDg5NmMtNWQ1ZC00OTAyLWIwYmUtZTA2NGMwZmZmNmZiIiwidCI6ImY2NWUwODUxLTYxM2QtNDEzNS05ZTE2LTUwOWFkYThjMDY2YiJ9 .

This resource is reserved for Vincentian members only; access to this resource can not be shared with neighbors, landlords, etc, under any circumstances.

Repeating great news: In mid-October, our Council temporarily augmented our original FY2023 CAF budget provision of $60,000 per month. Our Council is subsidizing $80,000 per month for October, November, & December, 2022. Please note:

We can extend this Council subsidy plus any twinning to CAF from fellow Conferences. If your Conference is currently blessed with funds exceeding 2-3 months of your normal operating outflow, please know that we have fellow Conferences in search of funds to invest in lifting neighbors right now. We invite your Conference to discern if twinning is your best available act of faithful stewardship. Financial twinning can take at least 3 different forms, as determined by the sharing Conference: (1) Twin directly to our CAF, in which case the twinned amount joins our District Council's subsidy to add CAF capacity; (2) Twin in direct response to a fellow Conference's specific neighbor request; (3) Twin to a Conference you designate (1-time or recurring) for them to extend to their neighbors as they discern. Please contact Tom Roberts, 513.345.4910 or troberts@svdpcincinnati.org , for more info or to twin. It will feel good knowing you are investing these dollars in our neighbors and community now, as your donors intend.

Our ERA 2 Program remains available to qualified tenant neighbors who reside within the City of Cincinnati. Please read below for more information.

While our CAF exists to be extended to your/our neighbors, please also seize opportunities to help our neighbors experiencing need to access governmental programs for which they may qualify and other publicly- and privately-funded assistance resources. This is particularly relevant for neighbors navigating chronic budgetary shortfalls. Examples include SNAP, SSDI, and the OWF & PRC programs administered by Hamilton County Job and Family Services ("JFS").

Finally, we remind you that your Conference must now be utilizing CMS to access CAF for your/our neighbors. Each CAF application submitted should have a CMS case #. Why? CMS, as now used by the vast majority of our Conferences, is proving to be an extremely useful tool to do our good works even better.

Publicly-Funded Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERA 2)

ERA 2, funded through the City of Cincinnati, is available for qualified/eligible tenant neighbors who reside within the City of Cincinnati. The City's funding is currently committed to December, 2022. As of today, we (Conferences) have approved 83 ERA 2 applications and have 30 more in progress. As a publicly funded program, ERA 2 does require specific information and documentation...resulting in more time investment. You can find ERA 2 informational content and our application on the Member Support and Forms page (password: member) of our SVDP-Cincinnati website.

Earlier this month, we suspended accepting fresh ERA 2 applications due to the depth of our applications queue. Thanks to the quality of your applications submitted; the efforts of Olivia, Alec, & our volunteers team; and additional funding committed by the City of Cincinnati, we are again accepting ERA 2 applications effective immediately. As we are committed to managing expectations of our neighbors and Vincentians…while providing an acceptably responsive turnaround time for all stakeholders, including landlords and utility providers…please understand the following:

  • We intend to accept new ERA 2 applications until we receive 20 applications, or Fri, 12/2, or our funding is fully committed, whichever comes first
  • Our acceptance of an ERA 2 application does not guaranty assistance will be extended: we must determine that the neighbor is eligible; we must have all the info and documentation requested, including from the landlord or utility; and we must be able to accomplish this while there are still City of Cincinnati funds available to us

We will continue to share weekly progress here. Thanks for your understanding and collaboration.

Rahe Beds Fund & Program

All November bed requests have been processed. We will not be able to extend any additional vouchers in November.

If your Conference is considering purchasing beds to extend as assistance, you can get info, including current pricing, or purchase by contacting Dave Chidlow, Stores Retail Resource Manager, at dchidlow@svdpcincinnati.org or 513.853.1002. Your purchased beds will be picked up at our CHRC within our Liz Carter Center. Please be aware that our beds cost and resale pricing have risen significantly.

We still have cribs and pack ‘n’ plays available for neighbors with children too young for beds (under age two). These do not count against the limit of two Rahe beds per household per lifetime. If you have a neighbor who is in need of one, please contact Phuong at rahebedfund@svdpcincinnati.org . We will provide the neighbor with a voucher that can be redeemed at our CHRC.

Do you have questions about our Rahe Beds Fund & Program?

You can find the most updated Bed Fund Conference Guide in the Members section of the SVDP website. A recording of our recent Resource Spotlight featuring beds assistance will also soon be available. Our online request form can be found here .

Metro Bus Passes (Everybody Rides Metro)

Your Conference has access to Metro single-day bus passes to be extended to neighbors for use for any of 3 defined purposes:

1. Commute to/from new employment

2. Commute to/from our Bank St services hub or other community social services

3. Commute to/from medical appointments

Please understand that these passes are sourced through the Everybody Rides Metro program and our Council is required to comply with the above-referenced usages and submit reports of passes distributed. Please also understand that your Conference will need to record bus passes extended in CMS for the neighbors receiving this assistance. Our Bus Pass Guidelines sheet for Conferences is available to you on the Members Support page of our website https://www.svdpcincinnati.org/conferences-members/member-support/

or use this link to go directly to this document:

https://www.svdpcincinnati.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/06/Bus-Tickets-Policy.pdf

If your Conference wants to learn more about this program or request passes, please contact Alec Jewell, Conferences Manager, at ajewell@svdpcincinnati.org or 513.345.4983.

Our Re-Entry Program

If you would like to host Dion at a Conference meeting, get together with him in another way, or discuss a particular situation, Dion can be reached at 513.562.8851 or dcrockett@svdpcincinnati.org .

Cooking Improv with La Soupe

Our partner La Soupe teams with our Catino Choice Pantry to present monthly Cooking Improv demonstrations in the Teaching Kitchen at our NOC. Instructors from La Soupe and volunteers engage participants on basic cooking principles and how to use what you have to create delicious, nutritious meals. All recipes are based off ingredients found daily in our Catino Choice Pantry. Neighbors are encouraged to sample the delicious dishes and discuss preparation and ingredients with our staff, volunteers, and resident La Soupe instructor, Chef Mona!

These sessions are held on the first Wednesday of each month - which means our next event is Wednesday, 12/7, 11am-1pm. No pre-registration is required.

Feel free to share this information with your neighbors, or if you’re interested in getting involved in our Teaching Kitchen programming, please reach out to Demi Schoenherr at dschoenherr@svdpcincinnati.org for more information.

Haircuts from the Heart in our NOC

This is a free haircut program, courtesy of our partner Franciscan Ministries. Stylist Margarita will be in our NOC on the first and second Monday of each month, 9am-noon, cutting hair in a room on the 2nd floor. Our next haircut date is 12/5. Neighbors are accepted on a walk-in basis, and should sign in at our NOC reception desk upon arrival.

Education Center Within Our Neyer Outreach Center

Our NOC Education Center is available for our neighbors and Vincentians to use during our operating hours: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4pm, and Saturday, 8am - noon.

Language Service Available to our Conferences

A growing number of our Conferences are experiencing increased interactions with Latino members of our community…and are struggling to effectively communicate with neighbors who are most fluent or exclusively fluent in Spanish. We have contracted a dedicated language service to help you engage these neighbors in a welcoming, affirming manner. Any Conference member can download the “LanguageLine InSight” app on your smartphone, tablet, or computer at https://insight.languageline.com/ . You simply need to use the Authentication Code 6NN692GLS2 the first time you login. Through this app you will have access to over 40 different languages, including Spanish, via an interpreter. You will have the option of either audio or visual (for those needing sign language); we strongly encourage using visual only when you must. Please be efficient in your utilization as our Council pays by the minute for this service; visual is nearly twice as expensive as audio. When you access the service, you will be asked for your name and department, you simply need to state your name, then “St Vincent de Paul Cincinnati Conferences”, then your Conference name. Be sure to only call through the app; you cannot use this service through a regular phone call.

A testimonial from within our Council, "We actually just gave the line a call, figured trying it out would be the best way to know. It was very easy. You login and just select the language, then immediately it connects you with an interpreter who can add the other person to the call. It’s all through the app, very quick, very easy."

Our Charitable Pharmacy and Social Services are already using this tool to engage our Latino neighbors.

If you have any questions or are having trouble accessing the service, please reach out to Alec or Olivia of your Conferences Support Team.

A final seed to plant: If your Conference is among those engaging more neighbors preferring or needing to communicate in Spanish, please consider this an opportunity to seek the addition of Spanish-speaking members. This could enhance your responsive communication and expand your Conference’s perspective.

Christ Church Plumb Line

Olivia Scheper, Conferences Support Coordinator, is our central contact point-person. Plumb Line only accepts assistance referrals from this single SVDP point-person.

As a reminder, Plumb Line can assist with $400 of past due rent for neighbors who are currently working.

Please note: Your Conference does not need to enter your request for Plumb Line assistance into CMS when you submit it to Olivia. Olivia will add the referral into CMS once she submits it to Christ Church.

All referrals to Plumb Line should be sent to:

Olivia Scheper

oscheper@svdpcincinnati.org

Phone: 513.345.4986, ext 239

Please understand and have faith: Plumb Line only communicates with the landlord and the neighbor after our referral is made. Therefore, once we have submitted your neighbor referral to Plumb Line, no news is good news. Christ Church will only communicate with us when they are unable to assist a neighbor or there are difficulties with a case. We should not contact Christ Church for status reports on a referral.
