One Seed at a Time
As child growing up on a dairy farm, I learned a lot about seed time and harvest, the rhythm of the seasons, and ongoing work. One of my favorite activities as a small child was riding on the tractor with my dad as he worked in the fields: the soil was tilled, the seeds planted carefully, and the harvest gathered. I learned about the rhythm of planting, growing, harvesting, and the stewardship of the earth as I continued to grow and join in the work of the farm.
The seeds for Susquehanna Valley Ministry Center were planted in the early 1990s as persons recognized the need for regionally-based ministry training. The vision was nurtured as conversations were held, feasibility studied, and partners invited. The seeds grew as districts and Bethany Theological Seminary joined the partnership. The first classes were held in 1993. From 1993 to this 25th anniversary in 2018, SVMC has provided ministry training on the academy certificate and graduate levels, as well as continuing education opportunities for clergy.
Paul, writing in Colossians, calls us to lead lives worthy of the Lord, bearing fruit as we grow in knowledge of the Lord. Growing in knowledge and bearing fruit requires faithful discipline to deepen our relationship with Jesus, and it requires study not only in coursework to attain a certificate or degree, but lifelong study both personally and in community. Knowledge should not only be accumulated but also provide direction to leading productive lives.
SVMC works in collaboration with district partners as we strive to live out the counsel of Proverbs 9:9: Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning. Wisdom begins with knowing God, who gives insight for living.
SVMC is thankful for our strong foundation and partnership. We celebrate the present, and we look to the future as we are rooted and growing in study and service for the glory of God and our neighbor’s good.
One seed at a time: we are planted, rooted, and growing as we work together to bring forth the kingdom of God.
