Contest Rules

1.       All participants must be 18yrs old or younger.

2.       Drawings should be submitted in PDF (Portable document format) if possible. Mailed in entries should be mailed to the club’s post office box and arrive no later than June 30, 2020. Emailed entries should be emailed to [email protected].

3.       Submitted drawings can be submitted using PCA’S coloring pages or a drawing of any Porsche model freehand, traced or any method but must not infringe any copyright.

4.       Judging will be performed by the Drifter Editor and Webmaster.

5.       Four (4) prizes will be awarded. One for each age group.

6.       The grand prize of having your drawing used as a cover for the drifter will be selected from the four groups. Each group will be judged using appropriate criteria for the different age groups. No group has a better chance of winning.

7.       The winners will be announced with the publishing of the July Drifter.

8.       All drawings will be posted to our club website.

Prizes

1.       First place prize winner will have their drawing used as the cover (mast head) of the July issue of the Drifter.

2.       The winner of age group eight and under will win either a kids meal gift certificate or a beginning art set .

3.       The winner of age group nine to twelve will win either a beginners art set or a gift certificate for a go kart race. Note to be eligible to accept the go kart certificate, the winner must fulfill the requirements of the facility, including height.

4.       The winner of age group thirteen to sixteen can also win either a go kart race or an art set. The winner must fulfill the requirements of the facility, including height.

5.       The winner of the age group seventeen through eighteen will win a day of autocross introduction, riding with an instructor. Note in order to be eligible to ride and attend an autocross event, the winner (in under 18 yrs) must be enrolled in the PCA Junior Program and fulfill the requirements of the autocross team.

Hoping everyone will have a Happy 4 ^th of July and that you were able to get out and find somewhere to enjoy the celebration!

As we look through the windshield let’s hope we see a better horizon than what we saw in the rear view mirror over the past few months.

My message this month is to inform everyone that our by-laws have been reviewed and updated by Past President Gregg Plourde and the By-Laws Committee that included Jerry Alter, Liz Houser, Mardi Quain, and Mike Dunn.  Many of the changes are adapting to the direction PCA is asking from the regions so some of it may be sounding a bit like legal wording. One of the areas I’d like to bring to your attention to is with term limits.

There will be 2 versions posted for your review for the purposes of gaining your approval. One version will be a “clean” version and the second version will include the edits. Some have asked for the ability to see the details. One other document will be an outline Gregg has provided that summarizes the changes.

Included in this month’s Drifter will be a letter from Gregg and the Committee outlining the work they did, it was intense I must say, and should be remembered as one of the most extensive updates the club has done since becoming established. They ask is for each member to read over the by-laws followed by submitting your vote when the polls open. Because this was such an extensive job hopefully you can give your BoD, Gregg, and the By-Laws Committee your approval.

The second update I’d like to provide is regarding the SVR Badge. Although the logo goes back to almost the point when the club was formed we were notified by the PCA Policy Committee that our badge using the caricature of a Porsche was in violation and we needed to change it. As we looked at our options the common message was the badge is almost 60 years old and rather than change the caricature to an official version of a Porsche that we would like to retire the badge with honors and dignity and have the members submit designs or ideas for its replacement. The request is to ask if there are any members that would like to be part of the Badge Committee to let me know. The goal is to pick a design to be unveiled at the SVR 60 ^th Anniversary in 2022.

Bylaws Update. Vote Coming in July

An important requirement by the Porsche Club of America is that the regions (SVR) review at least once a year their bylaws and update it, as necessary.

Your clubs Board of Directors reviews the changes PCA makes and updates our bylaws when the changes merit an update. The last update was in November 2015 and the previous one was in April 2002. Due to the many changes at PCA, a review and update was deemed necessary and back in April 2019 a committee was formed by the region Secretary, Mardi Quain to start the process. Volunteers Liz Houser, Mike Dunn, Jerry Alter and I joined Mardi in the project.

We compared our 2015 bylaws to the bylaw template provide by PCA’s National Policy Committee and we dug in.

There have been changes by PCA’s National Policy Committee to the way regions govern themselves. Clarifications in wording and processes were added to our bylaws to more in alignment with PCA guidelines.

We met many times and compared the two documents. Made our changes and submitted to the National Policy Committee for review. They came back with more changes/additions that we expected and had no less than three meetings with the National Policy Committee over the summer of 2019. We met with long time regular members of the club who have been in a leadership role in the past and reviewed in detail with them. We reviewed the bylaws with your Board of Directors in the fall of 2019 and it was determined that they were suitable for vote by the membership in the fall. A flaw was found in the terms section defining serving on the board. Since voting had commenced, it was too late to delay the vote. The final vote was to not approve. We made the corrected changes and other clarifications and reviewed these changes with all involved. They have all agreed that the proposed bylaws are now ready for a vote to approve.

So, what has changed? Along with aligning wording and processes to be in line with PCA guidelines, we made the following changes.

·         Moved the address from the bylaws into polices so a vote of the membership is not required should the need to change it arise.

·         Re wrote the definition of membership and classes of membership to match national guidelines.

·         Removed the area of membership section as PCA assigns a region to a new member by zip code.

·         Right sized the board to seven members, changed the terms of office for Board of Directors and made changes to the election process.

·         Made changes to each board member duties.

·         Added PCA recommended language to sections involving personal liabilities, conflict of interest, and financial oversight.

The schedule of review and voting will be as follows:

From July 1 - 14, we will post a detailed overview of the changes made on our SVR website along with the bylaws in two forms. One; a plain text in its final version, and two; a “redlined” copy showing the changes in context with the 2015 bylaws.

July 15 – 29 we will start the vote to approve the bylaws.

My personal thanks to the Bylaw Committee, they have put in a lot of time and effort on this project and we encourage you to vote to approve the new version.

Tour Update

The year 2020 has certainly presented challenges for our driving Tours. I’m hoping to bring back some day tours with smaller groups of cars before the snow flies.

After moving the date to August, I’ve realized the Ladies Driving Tour will have to be postponed to 2021 or 2022. Restaurants are just opening and they are very hesitant to host groups at this time.

Currently the ONLY tours set to move forward are the July 3-5th Weaverville Tour, the August 8 ^th Buck’s Lake Tour and the September Yosemite Tour. Ed. note, Mendocino Tour is also scheduled. Of course these are ALL tentative with fingers and toes crossed!

While it’s very unfortunate that these fun, social events have to be cancelled, the health and safety of our members is a top priority. Looking forward to driving with you all SOON.

SVR Charity Chair is still Open

The SVR Board of Directors recently reviewed the club chair positions and there are a number of opportunities that need to be filled and would like to ask for anyone interested to let us know and we can answer any questions you might have to get you started.

Charity Chair

SVR provides its members a common interest to get together as a car club and also serves a bigger purpose. Many organizations have greatly benefited thru the contributions that SVR has made. Examples such as funding the Sacramento Children’s Home with their programs to promote child safety, positive parenting, education, mental health, and improve the healthy functioning of families, Ride to Walk to enhance the lives of children and young adults with neurological disabilities by providing innovative therapeutic horseback riding activities and most recently SVR supported Angel Flight West , for those that have a rare condition, require specialized medical treatment or surgery, have a difficult to diagnose condition, or have a child with a rare or serious illness, that may need to travel a long distance to a center of excellence facility. In addition the club supported the Friends of the Folsom Zoo whose mission is to preserve and enhance the lives of the animals living at the Folsom City Zoo Sanctuary.

There is a long list of organizations and especially the lives of people within our region that SVR has affected by the contributions made over its many years as a club.

 

The person we are looking forward to working with would be providing the leadership in bringing together the resources to hold a charity event and continue to contribute to a worthy cause that adds another shining star to why we are more than just a car club. The charity events have been held in back yards, online, or as part of a club event such as the SVR Christmas Party using auctioneers like Kirk Bradford and Kim Nelson to enhance the bidding process to silent auctions and even for the first time Lois Robert’s online auction. There’s no telling what can come out of the experience but you know one thing for sure is the people that benefit from your work will be extremely grateful for having an impact on their lives.

Golden Gate Region Secures New Autocross Site:

Golden Gate Region has found a new site to host their events after losing their beloved Alameda site at the end of last season. Golden Gate Region’s Ed Hunter and Himanshu Patel worked diligently through the early part of this year and searched for a replacement site and finally signed contracts for several dates at the Cow Palace in Daly City. Their first event of the season on June 28 ^th, with restricted attendance for only 50 drivers, was over-subscribed in less than two minutes. The wait list has more than 50 drivers all hoping to get a chance to participate. Not likely that they are going to?

Also landing a few dates at the Cow Palace is Loma Prieta Region which will be hosting two dual events at the Cow Palace with Golden Gate Region on August 29-30 and October 24-25.

 

Zone Autocross and Concours Series Schedule;

The schedule for autocross and the concours series has been one of constant cancellations and changes due to the coronavirus. The schedule was recently update with both Loma Prieta and Golden Gate Regions having signed contracts for dates at the Cow Palace which brings the zone autocross series to a total of 7 events. On the concours series, Monterey Bay Region has rescheduled their Zone Concours series event to October 25 ^th in the hopes that the wonderful community park they have had their event the past few years will loosen their large group gatherings to allow for this wonderful event to happen. The first concours event of the year for the series is likely to be on August 23 ^rd at Carlsen Porsche in Redwood City and hosted by Golden Gate Region. Zone 7 Autocross chairs, Roy Schauben and Simone Kopitzky are hopeful it will happen. Hopefully, all the regions will be able to deliver events on the dates as of this column. I am hoping that counties and cities will continue to open for business and allow many of our club events that are on the calendar.
