Event Publicity Notice?
Expect to start seeing the notice below in the monthly DRIFTER, our eBLASTS, the website, and on the MotorsportReg (MSR) pages that we have for our events.
|
|
|
|
· This is something that has been in the PCA RPM (Region Procedures Manual) since at least 2019 and is now appearing at more and more PCA events (social media driven).
· Obviousily we have been exposed to being photographed and videotaped for years (the red light cameras for example), stores where you shop, when you use an ATM, etc.
· So SMILE when attending one of our events.
Some quick updates on upcoming events---
· November 16th – SVR Planning and Pizza – 40 people already signed up.
· November 18th – SVR TSD Rally – 11 cars already signed up.
· November 19th – Caffeine and Porsches at Porsche Rocklin Center– sponsored by Porsche Rocklin…9 am to 11:30 am…details elsewhere.
· November 26th – Christmas Tree Decorating and pot luck and CHiPs for Kids toy drive at CAM (California Automobile Museum).
· December 3rd – Shriners Children’s Toy Drive (Rally 4 Kids – sponsored by EuroSunday) – coordinated by Dick MacFarlane…more details coming.
· December 13th – SVR Porschettes – holiday gathering for the ladies at the home of Susan Green from 4 to 6 pm…….details elsewhere.
· December 23rd – SVR Christmas Party – Roseville…details elsewhere.
· January 1st – Tour and no host lunch ending at BJ’s in Folsom.
· February 12th – return of the pre-Valentines dinner in Elk Grove by the Peart’s.
Several recent passings
· Dan Rowland; leader of many tours in August to the Lake Tahoe Wooden Boat Concours; along with Bill Keegan were our reporters on the scene for many years providing coverage of the Los Angeles Car Show in November for the DRIFTER.
· Jan Hoover; wife of Herb Hoover for 75 years; for years involved with dinners, breakfasts, and tours.
Gossip?
· I received a request from a SVR member who wanted to possibly start a column in the DRIFTER that provides for some general gossip (Porsche or otherwise). Exaggerations and half-truths accepted. Snitching on your fellow member is fair game.
· The member wants to remain anonymous so gossip would only be accepted via email.

Message from the Tour Chair
By Rick Duste
Photos Rick Duste
With COVID era restrictions behind us we were able to host a number of road tours this season.
We began in April with the CRAB event tour, two New Member Tours to Andis Winery in Plymouth, six day- tours to Old Town Pizza in Auburn, the Highway-4-Diner in Murphys, Fawnridge Winery outside Auburn, El Dorado Saloon & grill, and The Point Restaurant in Rio Vista.
Mike & Emily Willis led a multi-day tour to Hearst Castle and Rik Larson led the always popular multi-day Mendocino Tour.
Thanks to all those who helped this year with leads and sweeps, especially Michael Born, Ray DeLaughder, Colin Fat, Dave Aronson, Carlos Bocanegra, Kirk Bradford, Stefan Hepper, Eric Kephart, Matt Menning, Frank Presig, Tom Simkinson, Howard Wolf, Rik Larson, Bob Peake, John Leet, and Susan Green.
Planning for 2024 is well underway with our first day-tour on January 1st. We’ll leave from El Dorado Hills Town Center and wonder south before heading back north for lunch and merriment at BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse in Folsom.
Come root on your favorite Rose Bowl team!
Watch for details and dates for 2024 in the December Drifter.

Christmas Tree Decorating and Potluck
At the California Auto Museum
Plus – ChiPs For Kids Toy Drive
Sunday, November 26th starting at 2:00 pm
The California Auto Museum’s annual Christmas Tree Decorating Party and Potluck is a wonderful way to kick off the holiday season with your friends and an opportunity to meet many new people in our club as well as other Automobile enthusiasts.
Our club has two Christmas trees to decorate and we have a lot of ornaments from past years. However, we would love to see more ornaments that you have made. An ornament showing your car and/or yourselves is a great way to show the 1000’s of people that pass through the Museum during the Holiday Season just what a great car club we have.
We will trim the trees beginning at 2:00 pm, followed by the Potluck at 4:00 pm. Everyone is asked to bring a dish to share with the other car clubs. For our Porsche Clubs they are asking our members bring a Side Dish or Salad for the Potluck. This year, CAM can provide outlets if you would like to bring a warm dish. The Museum will be providing the main dish of Turkey and Ham as well as coffee, utensils and other paper products. They will also have a cash bar.
A highlight of this event every year is the Door Prize Raffle. They always have some great Raffle gifts and the money collected helps the Museum pay for the event.
This year SVR’s annual toy drive CHiPs for Kids is happening at CAM during this Tree Decorating party. Bring your unwrapped, new toy to CAM for collection. As before, there will be a CHP officer to collect the toys. And if you want to give a toy but are not able to attend the party, CAM will have receptacles located in the Museum’s lobby starting November 1st where you can drop off your toy.
If you plan on joining the fun this year, please sign up prior to Friday, November 10th at: http://msreg.com/23CTD
We hope to see you there.

2023 Fall New Member Tour

The Fall New Member tour to Andis Winery was a huge success thanks to the great organization and planning by board members Rik Duste and Steve Long.
A total of around 50 new members and co-members attended the event. Following a spirited drive into some of Placerville's most scenic roads. The tour was about 1 hour and 15 minutes and covered approximately 50 some miles of pristine back country roads.
I think the new members really enjoyed the tour. The weather could not have been more perfect with clear skies and mild fall temperatures.
Andis Winery did a fabulous job with the lunch buffet and master of ceremonies, Steve Long, did a great job as master of ceremonies for the program.
Please enjoy the photos of the event at the below link

Photos Gregg Pert & Dick Mac Farlane
SVR was invited to participate in this year's Sacramento Auto Show.
October 26-29 at Cal Expo.
The first auto show to be held in the past 3 years . We had a prime location right in the middle of the hall and displayed 12 cars .
We visited with many SVR members and non-members during the 3 day show . Several took an SVR application and are planning on joining.
Thank you to Mike Ambrozevich for bringing his Carrera GT as well as the other 11 Porsches on display .
Also a big thank you for the many volunteers that hosted the SVR informative table during the show.

My Sports Car Journey #4
The BMW 1600 ti
By Jim Robison
Redwood Region-PCA
|
Fritz Warren, owner of Sports Car Center in Santa Ana, had asked me to drive his truck towing his TVR race car and a Formula Junior, to the Santa Barbara races. But, he explained, it would be without pay or admission to the races. Through my SCCA contacts, I gained entry and was assigned to the working pit along the main straight. I heard loud voices behind me and turned to see Fritz and his crew trying to get into the pit, but being denied by my co-worker, the gate guard. He was telling Fritz that only crews with a car currently on the track were allowed in the working pit. I walked over and told the gate guard it was okay to let them in, which he did. It’s strange how I was treated with a lot more respect at work after that weekend.
A couple years later I was drafted into the Army. I had been on a student deferment, but it ran out after four years and, because I had changed majors, I still needed another year to graduate. So, in November of my senior year, I dropped out of college, sold the Glas 1300 GT (story #2) and reported for active duty. I applied for Officer Candidate School and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery. Most of my OCS classmates would spend a few months at a stateside post prior to a 13-month tour in exciting Viet Nam, but I was assigned to a two-year tour in Germany. I married Lori (story #1) and we enjoyed a “two-year honeymoon in Europe courtesy of US taxpayers.” Thank you very much! The only shooting I ever did was on a firing range, and it was with a 155 mm howitzer, not a rifle.
We needed a car. Porsches and Mercedes Benz were too expensive and VWs were too boring. The local BMW dealer who told us a new model, the 1600, had just been introduced. He gave us a brochure for the sports version, the 1600 ti (1573 cc inline four putting out 104 HP thanks to a pair of side-draft, dual throat Solex carbs). We ordered one, to be delivered in a couple days. That was fine, as I needed to arrange financing. American Express operated a bank on base and I filled out the loan application. There was a misunderstanding because they gave me the money, about $2500 worth, in twenty-mark notes, each equivalent to about $5, so that was about 50,000 notes. They filled my brief case and caused quite a commotion when I opened it at the dealership. What’s German for “American gangsters?”
We rented an apartment at the end of a long, narrow, twisty driveway with a jagged rock wall on one side, a drop-off on the other, and no place for a U-turn. I had to back out the driveway every morning to get to the main road. Of course, with practice comes confidence, and with confidence comes speed. I became the master of the backup.
I entered an autocross at a nearby airbase. They didn’t have a lot of room, so they designed a dogleg route that was driven forward to the end, and then backward to the start/finish line. Most drivers were a lot faster than me on the forward pass, but struggled on the return trip. I was just the opposite, backing into first in class and second overall. In the spirit of full disclosure, I got lost on the only other autocross I entered in Germany and was declared a DNF (did not finish).
I was not the only Army lieutenant racing around Germany in 1968 and 69. John Buffum was discovering the World Rally Championship in a Porsche 911T. He would go on to dominate the SCCA Pro Rally series with 11 National Championships and 117 Pro Rally victories, the most by any Pro Rally driver. I eventually met him at the Mendocino Forest Rally, but that’s a story for another month.
On a cold and wet winter night Lori and I were riding with another military couple in their Mercedes Benz to a highly-recommended restaurant in a nearby town. On a back road (of course, it’s always on a back road) the engine sputtered and died. The driver said it felt like we were out of gas (or diesel, I don’t recall), but the gauge registered a nearly full tank. We got out, removed the fuel cap, and dipped a small branch into the tank. It came back wet, so we replaced the cap, started the car, and off we went. And then it died again. It was freezing, snowing, and dark. We were stranded and we were not dressed for a trek thru the snow. The evening we had been dreaming of was turning into a nightmare. What was wrong with the car and what could we do about it?
To be continued…

El Dorado Hills Tour
By Mike Willis
Photos Collin Fat
Rick has done it again with another
wonderful tour.
We had a good turnout and used three groups to make the drive easier to manage and also give others experience in tour leading.
Traffic was not bad and we were pretty much able to stay together in each of the groups.
Our finish location had good parking and good food. We were able to sit back and talk about the tour and meet new members as well.
Ricks tours are a another great way to share the "Wealth" of being a part of SVR.
Keep your calendar handy to fill in these tours for 2024.
