Porsche: a lifelong passion

My love for Porsche began before I was old enough to understand what made a car special. I was about seven years old when my neighbor, Mr. Johnson, took delivery of a new Carrera 4S Cabriolet. I remember standing there as the car came off the delivery truck, watching the dark blue paint shimmer in the afternoon summer sun. Then the roof folded away, revealing that deep red interior, and I heard the engine for the first time. I had never heard a car sound like that before. To me, it was beautiful in a way I had never experienced.
Mr. Johnson was kind enough to let me sit behind the wheel and tell me about how fast it was and how much fun it was to drive. I didn't know much about cars then, but I knew I wanted to understand them. That moment planted something that never really left me.
A few years later, I saw a Guards Red 996 911 Turbo S on television, tearing around the Nürburgring. I was eight years old, and until then, I don't think I understood what a sports car could actually be. That Porsche seemed to redefine everything I thought a car could do. It was incredibly beautiful, but it was also unbelievably powerful and purposeful. Seeing it attack a racetrack made an impression on me that has lasted ever since. In many ways, that 996 became the car that I would forever associate with the idea of a dream Porsche.
When I was in grade school, my mom had a BMW Z4 with a six-speed manual. That car introduced me to another side of what I loved about sports cars: the connection between the driver and the machine. I began to appreciate that a great car wasn't simply about how fast it could go. It was about how it felt, how it responded, and how involved it made you feel. That idea has always been central to what I admire about Porsche, and something my mom also instilled in me, that being my passion for fast cars. She now has a Guards Red Boxster to accompany my Dad's Boxster S in the garage.
For me, Porsche has always represented the very best of automotive engineering. It's the combination of incredible motorsport history, generations of heritage, timeless design, and genuine driver involvement. I love the way Porsche has evolved without losing its identity, the story of air-cooled and water-cooled engines, the constant pursuit of engineering excellence, and the way even the most modern cars still feel connected to heritage.
Some of my favorite memories surrounding cars have also been shared with my dad. We have been golfing together since I was about five, and those days on the course have given us countless opportunities to spend time together and share our interests. Cars became another part of that relationship. For my 23rd birthday, he gave me a beautiful 1A Black Porsche Macan S. To have my dad, who had shared so many of those early memories with me, give me my first Porsche made the car mean so much more than simply owning a Porsche. It felt like a continuation of something that had started when I was a little kid watching a Carrera 4S arrive next door. Such a touching gift.
Being selected for the Porsche SVR Drifter this month is incredibly meaningful to me because Porsche has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Being the Editor for the Drifter is also such a rewarding and enriching experience. What began with an eight year-old watching a Guards Red 911 on a racetrack has grown into a genuine appreciation for the engineering, history, design, and passion behind the marque, and for the amazing folks here in this club.
I still have a long list of Porsches I dream of owning someday, but the 996 911 Turbo S will always hold a special place in my heart. It was the first Porsche that made me dream beyond simply owning a beautiful car. It made me dream about what a car could actually be. Something with no substitute.

We have an action-packed lineup of events ahead, including upcoming rallies, scenic tours, hands-on tech sessions, competitive autocross days, and fantastic social dinners. Also, please mark your calendars now for one of our biggest celebrations of the year: the SVR Holiday Party on Sunday, December 6th. Wise Villa Winery Tour 2026 Recap

To complete our weekend double header, our “A Sunday Drive” event began in Lincoln and after traversing 84 miles of roads through the valley orchards and foothill twisties we arrived back at Wise Villa Winery in Lincoln for lunch. The nice thing about Sunday morning drives is light traffic. As we experienced the day before on the Quincy 250-mile drive, noticeably light traffic for the most part. Leaving Lincoln, we headed northwest passing the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino before turning easterly to make our way along a long stretch of smooth country roads to Penn Valley. We made a brief stop at Western Gateway Park before starting back through windy country roads and forested hills to join highway 49. Exiting at Joeger Rd, we travelled past rural country homes and ranches before arriving at Wise Villa Winery, on Wise Rd of course, for lunch, wine tasting, and socializing with fellow members. A number of diehards, including Michael Sheehan and Cathy Chen, Dave Thompson, Roy Wright and Carol Shae, and Robert Dundon and JoAnne Towbridge participated in both days getting the full Porsche experience. Thanks to Ray DeLaughder and Ashley Kaiser, Dave Thompson and Christine Thompson, Rick and Linda Duste, and Bob and Genny Paauwe for leading and sweeping.

Quincy 250 Driving Tour Recap

“The most fun I’ve had since buying the Porsche a year ago!” quote from Bob Peters. Pretty much sums it up. Our experimental 253-mile driving tour to Quincy and back turned out to be great fun. Proposed and planned by member Stefan Hepper, the thought was to be on the road by 7:00 AM to beat the traffic and run in small groups of eight so staying together would be easy. It worked out perfectly. Traffic was light on the leg from Lincoln up to Oroville. Our three groups met up with a group from Shasta Region before continuing on the 60-mile run up route162 from Oroville to Quincy. We saw almost no cars the entire way. We were surprised to find a parade on Main Street in Quincy which closed the road starting at 10:00 AM. But we were able skirt by to join Highway 70 before the parade began. The group socialized, shared what each of our respective Regions have been up to, and ate lunch in the local park before following the Yuba River 90 miles back to Oroville. Stunning views, ultra smooth sweeping turns, and again, almost no traffic. And those we encountered pulled over to let us by without hesitation. Our final stop was at the Forebay Park in Oroville before splitting up and heading home the most direct ways. Originally envisioned as a driver’s tour, we were surprised that more cars had passengers that not. Stefan is working another route for next year so stay tuned. SVR Charity Golf Tournament Scholarship Awards

Over the past couple months, I had the pleasure of meeting the students who were selected to receive our SVR scholarship awards. As many of you know, we raised $13,500 from the 2025 SVR Charity Golf Tournament, with all the proceeds being donated to college students enrolled in automotive technology programs at both Sierra College and American River College. We attended an awards barbecue in early May at ARC, where the scholarship winners were announced, and then over the next few weeks, we also hosted ARC students at Porsche Sacramento and Sierra College students at Porsche Rocklin. At both dealerships, the students received a detailed tour of the Porsche Service Center, hosted by the service managers, Larry Reuter and Joe Aulicino. Students had an opportunity to meet with Porsche service technicians and had a Q&A session to ensure all student questions were answered. After the service discussions, we had lunch with the students, congratulated the scholarship award winners and also awarded additional “outstanding students” from both schools, with Milwaukee tools sets.
Below are the students and the awards received. We are planning additional scholarship awards in the upcoming Fall semester.
ARC Students:
- $1,000 Scholarships to: Ebraheembeg Mirza, Ivan Bilokobylko and Yevhen Varlan
- Milwaukee tool sets to: Jose Flores, Najibullah Zaki and Randall Tory
Sierra College Students:

Heat Wave TSD Rally

On Saturday July 11 th , twenty teams of faithful Time, Speed, Distance (TSD) Rallyists came out to challenge themselves once again to follow instructions, control their throttles and stay focused at the “Heat Wave Rally.” After a pre-run briefing over coffee at Moonraker in Shingle Springs, driving spanned El Dorado, Amador and Sacramento counties. Teams were represented by the Sacramento Valley Region of PCA along with other clubs and vehicle makes. We welcome any TSD Rallyists to partake. Our club has become the Northern California hub for this kind of fun! In some circumstances, Rallyists have opted to purchase their own Porsche to be more immersed in the SVR!

SVR August Ambush TSD Rally 2026
Keep your eyes open as there could be bandits around any turn. This rally will take us south of Folsom as the bandits try to prevent you from hitting your checkpoints on time. The route will conclude at the bandit-free zone, Skipolini’s Pizza in Folsom, where cold beverages and good company await.

Mendocino Tour 2026

Yes, the Mendocino Tour is back again! This is a 3-day, 2-night tour to the Mendocino area. This is also the weekend we get an hour back on Sunday (return to standard time). This is a very informal tour. We will have kite flying (weather permitting), miniature golf, and several socials. We have several hotels/inns that we work with to house our group. enjoy the company of fellow PCA members.
One of the things I enjoy most about serving as your Zone 7 Representative is seeing the incredible variety of events happening across our ten Regions. Every month offers something different, whether it's a scenic tour through wine country, an autocross chasing hundredths of a second, a beautifully prepared concours car, a weekend at the racetrack, or a casual gathering over coffee. No matter how you enjoy your Porsche, there"s a place for you in PCA.
If you haven't ventured outside your home Region yet this year, consider making August the month you do. Visit another Region"s event, introduce yourself, and experience firsthand the friendships and enthusiasm that make Zone 7 such a remarkable community.
