SVUSD Virtual Academy Opens
The SVUSD Virtual Academy is a K-8 school that offers a blend of online and class instruction to maximize flexibility and create a personalized learning experience for each student. The SVUSD Virtual Academy is a public school and is part of the Saddleback Valley Unified School District. Enrollment is open to all K-8 students.

OC High School Students Learning Job Skills from Industry Pros Through Summer Internships


Mason Naragon, an incoming senior at El Toro High School is among three dozen students across Orange County that landed internships this summer in high-demand industries through OC Pathways, a collaboration led by the Orange County Department of Education that includes 14 school districts, local colleges and universities, and more than 50 regional businesses.


The goal of these internships is to connect industries with students, training them to eventually serve as their next generation of skilled workers.


Other students this summer are working alongside professionals in healthcare, biotechnology, information technology, digital media, hospitality and other sectors.

Dr. Turner speaks at CA Teachers Summit

On Friday, July 28, thousands of teachers and educators participated in the California Teachers Summit 2017. The Teachers Summit is a day of learning and sharing innovative strategies and concrete tools for teachers. 

As a guest speaker, Dr. Turner's focus was on turning STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education into an immersive experience for students. 

As students begin the 2017-18 school year,  SVUSD looks forward to bringing innovative strategies to their classrooms.  

THHS Student Competes at Junior World Paralympic Championships
Michelle Cross, a senior track and field and cross country athlete, competed at the Junior World Paralympic Championships from July 30 to August 7 in Nottwil, Switzerland.

Cross competed in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash in Switzerland.

Students Soar in Summer English Language Development Enrichment Program
 
The ELD Summer Enrichment Program is a collaborative effort between SVUSD Services for English Learners Department and the Segerstrom Center for the Arts - Arts Teach Program.

SVUSD teachers and artists from Segerstrom Center for the Arts worked in partnership to create challenging and engaging learning environments for EL students to improve their proficiency in academic English.

The program was held in June and July on the Olivewood Elementary School Campus .

ETHS Theater Teacher Becomes Playwright for Local Show of "Robin Hood"

ETHS Theater Instructor, Daniel Blackley, was the playwright for the Camino Real Playhouse's version of "Robin Hood."

Fifty adult and student volunteers helped create the show, including ETHS student Eileen Giaza (pictured on the left).

The two-hour performance was presented Friday-Sunday through July 30 at the Camino Real Playhouse in San Juan Capistrano.

SVUSD Welcomes New Administrators
Director, Fiscal Services 
Susan Cortum has been selected as Director of Fiscal Services.  Ms. Cortum has worked with school districts for the last 9 years including the Etiwanda School District and the Hesperia School District before joining the Saddleback Valley Unified School District (SVUSD).  For the past year, Ms. Cortum has worked as the Budget Coordinator in the SVUSD Business Department. 

Ms. Cortum received her bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a  concentration in Accounting from the California State University, San Bernadino.

SVUSD welcomes Brad Cook to Mission Viejo High School for the 2017-18 school year.

Mr. Cook began his teaching career 12 years ago at Chapel Hill Independent School District in Tyler, Texas where he taught Social Studies and served as an athletic coach for Chapel Hill Middle School. Mr. Cook served at Whitehouse High School for the past 10 years in various roles such as Social Studies teacher, Response to Intervention committee team member, Academic & Recruiting Coordinator for athletes, Assistant Head Football Coach and Head Coach for Track & Field. Mr. Cook received his bachelor's degree in History from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, and master's degree in Educational Leadership with Principal Certification from the University of Texas at Tyler.
