In gratitude for the wonderful blessings Monsignor Bill has received throughout his life he started to endow a yearly merit scholarship for incoming eighth graders to St. Vincent de Paul School with the first school year being 2022-2023. The formal name is Msgr. William L. Young, III Scholarship, (the MBY Scholarship). The application process is held during the summer break and returned, on an anonymous basis, by August 1st. A pool of judges, no one with any links or ties to SVdP, judge the anonymous scholarships and award two winners. Each winner receives a $2,000 scholarship to their SVdP Tuition account.
This years 8th grade recipients are:
Vincent Equale
Gabriela Guerrero

Mrs. Dorrell
This is Mrs. Dorrell’s 18th year teaching at SVdP and her 26th year of teaching altogether. Mrs. Dorrell's son, Bruce, is a second grader at SVdP. Outside of teaching, Mrs. Dorrell enjoys spending time with her family and friends, attending her son’s sporting events, and playing with her dog, Dolly. One of her favorite things about teaching first grade is witnessing the incredible growth in her students. Mrs. Dorrell challenges her students, but also provides many opportunities to have fun! Mrs. Dorrell loves that her students are curious, enthusiastic, and eager to learn. She feels teaching first grade is very rewarding, as she enjoys seeing her students achieve milestones.

Mrs. Nybakken
Mrs. Nybakken has been teaching first grade here at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School for three amazing weeks! She has taught for 21 years spanning all grade levels from PK4-fifth grade. Her "home" for the most part of my teaching career has been in first grade, where she believes a significant change occurs in little minds. The joy and confidence that comes with the learning that takes place at this level is astounding. Outside of teaching, she enjoys spending time with her husband and son. Mrs. Nybakken and her family enjoy traveling together, talking together, watching movies and television together, but most importantly they enjoy growing together. She enjoys fitness, Pilates, health, and nutrition. Mrs. Nybakken's favorite thing about teaching first grade is the delight of little faces and minds learning to work together and be leaders of themselves.

Mrs. Bertini
This is Mrs. Bertini’s second year teaching at SVdP. She taught first grade for three years in San Jose, CA at a bilingual English/Vietnamese program, and before that in a dual immersion Spanish/English school in Orange County, CA. Teaching in a Catholic school is her favorite because she loves to share about Jesus Christ. Mrs. Bertini was married this past June and feels that Houston will now be her forever home. Mrs. Bertini graduated with a degree in Musical Theater, and she loves helping with music and choir. She hopes to learn and improve on speaking other languages such as Spanish, Vietnamese, and one day Ukrainian so she can speak with her mom. Mrs. Bertini especially enjoys seeing the growth that happens in first grade.

The Beginning of the Year (BOY) MAP Growth testing for grades K-8 will begin next Monday, September 9, 2024. The following beginning of the year tests will be administered:
- Grades K-1: Reading Fluency, Reading & Math
- Grades 2-3: Reading Fluency, Reading, Math & Language Usage
- Grades 4-8: Reading, Math, Language Usage & Science
MAP Growth tests are administered at the beginning, middle and end of the school year (in the fall, winter & spring).
Please note the following information regarding MAP/NWEA assessments:
NWEA (North West Evaluation Association) is a not-for-profit organization committed to help schools improve learning for all students. The NWEA assessment is required in all Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston schools.
MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) is an online assessment that is aligned to national standards and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). These computerized assessments are adaptive and offered in Reading, Language Usage, Mathematics and Science. When taking a MAP assessment, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all of the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a student answers approximately half the items correctly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the student’s achievement level. This is the most accurate way to pinpoint a student’s readiness to learn new material and concepts.
The NWEA/MAP assessment provides data for both student growth and achievement. The link below provides further information (A Family Guide to MAP Growth). A Family Guide to MAP Growth
Family reports will be sent home at the conclusion of the BOY assessment window.
