SYA IMPACTS FROM CORONAVIRUS
Message from SYA President
It is my sincere hope that everyone is safe and well during this difficult time. Your SYA Board, along with each sport, is busy planning for the future and is preparing for a number of different scenarios all dependent upon when the facilities will reopen. Our baseball and travel soccer programs are preparing for the possibility of a modified spring/summer season.
Our summer sports line-up includes basketball, rugby, track and ultimate frisbee. We will open registration for these sports as soon as we know when the fields and gyms will be available for us to use. Our plan is to also offer a selection of sports camps as well as “pick-up” game opportunities to get the kids playing again.
We know that many of our families are struggling and we want to help. We are working with the county to support food and clothing drives for those in need. We are also working to expand our scholarship program so that those families who lost jobs and income during this crisis can still have their children participate in sports when we are back up and running. We had many generous families who donated their fees to SYA during this crisis and we plan to pay it forward.
I want to thank all of our volunteers who make it possible for us to provide quality programming for the youth in our community. Since 1973, SYA has relied upon you to manage, coach, teach, mow, organize and support. You have helped thousands of kids who have grown up to be strong, caring, resourceful and resilient adults all through the love of sport. Sports teach us that success is not given but is earned through hard work and preparation. Because we have so many outstanding volunteers, SYA is working hard and is prepared to meet the many challenges that lie ahead.
All the best,
Jeff Stein

SYA Cheerleading and SYA Extreme Competition Cheer Keep on Winning!
SYA Cheerleading and SYA Extreme Competition Cheer elected a new Commissioner, Tammy McCarron, in May 2012. Since that time, both programs have significantly increased registrations. For the 2019-2020 season, SYA Cheer fielded nine sideline cheer teams (120+ athletes) and our Extreme Competition Cheer Program fielded SEVEN teams (130+ athletes). Our athletes range in ages from five to 18, and attend various high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools serving Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties.
This season, Extreme teams have competed in various competitions in Maryland, Virginia, and most recently, Orlando, Florida. At Reach the Beach in Ocean City, Maryland, in February, Extreme Hurricane, Cyclone, Thunder, and Black Ice took home the national championship title. Extreme Storm and Thunder won Paid Bids to The Quest Championship in Orlando, Florida, and Hurricane, Cyclone, and Lightning won At-Large Bids to the event held in March. At The Quest, all Extreme teams took home second place. For US Finals, scheduled to take place in May in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Extreme Hurricane, Storm, and Thunder have won Paid Bids to this event.
SYA Extreme also opened its own gym facility,
The Atmosphere,
located in Chantilly, VA, in August 2017.
The Atmosphere
is “where Extreme weather happens!!!” Registration for our Fall Sideline Cheer Program opens in May 2019, and evaluations for our SYA Extreme Competition Cheer Program will be held in May/June. No prior cheer experience is required!!! Details pertaining to evaluations can be found on our website under Competition Cheerleading – Team Evaluations. SYA Extreme will also be offering tumbling classes, flyer classes, and private tumbling lessons during the summer months for both programs, sideline and competition cheer.

Get to Know Your SYA Board!
Each month we will highlight one of our SYA board members.
Meet SYA Vice President Paul St. Germain
Paul has been involved with SYA since 2005 when he started as an assistant coach for his eldest son’s baseball team. He then moved on to coach basketball, football and lacrosse as his four sons moved through the SYA programs. He coached fall, winter and spring for over six years amassing five championships with his sons. When his sons decided to play lacrosse, Paul became a head coach for them at U11, U13 & U15, winning the U15A Championship with his oldest son, Harmon. Paul joined the SYA lacrosse board in 2008 and joined the SYA football board in 2009. He became the equipment manager during a time of significant change within football.
As a prelude to his work in youth sports as an adult, Paul, as a junior in high school, started one of the first the lacrosse programs in Fairfax County, at Robinson High School in 1978. Upon graduation from the University of Virginia, he became the Commissioner and President of the Northern Virginia Lacrosse Officials’ Association in 1984 managing the exponential growth of Lacrosse in the DMV. He was selected as an NCAA lacrosse official in 1987 and continued officiating youth, high school and collegiate lacrosse through the 2011 season.
In 2014, Paul accepted a coaching assignment with the Westfield High School lacrosse staff while continuing to coach SYA Football. Paul became a member of the SYA Executive Board in 2019 and serves as Executive Vice President.
Paul‘s professional life is in the aerospace, defense and IT industry currently working for CACI. He lives in Centreville with his wife Diane. They have four boys, Harmon, Carson, Harrison and Emerson, who all played in SYA from kindergarten through 8
