Message from the SYA President

On May 29 th , Fairfax County opened park and school fields for unpermitted use. The next step in the process of getting back to “normal” will be for the county to allow groups like ours to have scheduled access to these facilities. SYA has created an "SYA 6 Step Plan for Return to Play" along with sport specific guidelines to make sure that the health and safety of our participants, coaches and parents is paramount. These guidelines are compliant with CDC, State and local health department guidelines. All parents, coaches and volunteers will be required to acknowledge the document and support these guidelines. Please be aware that these guidelines and protocols will be changing as we progress through the phases of recovery from the pandemic.
In anticipation of an eventual return to play, we have opened "Pre-Registration" for all Fall sports as well as a modified Summer Baseball program. This process will allow you to save your spot in one of our sports without paying any fees at this time. Once we receive notification from the State and County that it is safe to play regular games, we will notify you to complete the registration and make payments.
This weekend we opened SYA Sports Park for limited use. This is to allow our travel programs to hold tryouts. We are working hard, as an organization run by volunteers, to do all we can to return to competition in a safe manner. I look forward to seeing our kids back out playing in the near future.

All the best,

Jeff Stein

Beat the Heat with Kona Ice!

A great May day was had in the VA Run community this past weekend with our SYA partnership with Kona Ice. Families enjoyed their shaved ice and with every purchase, Kona Ice donated part of the proceeds to SYA. We plan to continue this sponsorship through the summer and will advertise each week that we are holding an event on the SYA Facebook page and our SYA website

If you want Kona Ice to come to your community and help SYA with proceeds, reach out to Scott Liskey at SLISKEY@SYASPORTS.ORG and he will coordinate.

Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, the Sports Park is open only for limited use and to maintenance personnel. We are keeping your park in great shape, with reduced services so that we are ready to fully open when we get through this crisis. Stay safe!

Get to Know Your SYA Board!

Each month we will highlight one of our SYA board members.

Meet SYA Secretary Erich Wiemann

SYA is a large part of Erich’s family. All of his children (JP, Ben, Will and Allie), and his wife Jennifer, who grew up in Centreville, have played multiple SYA sports. Erich and Jennifer have volunteered for over 15 years in various capacities. Erich has held several positions within the organization, most recently returning as the SYA Secretary after seven years of running SYA’s soccer program.
Erich’s passion is soccer and mentoring young leaders. In 2016, he began coaching high school boys soccer at Westfield and has helped grow and cultivate a new culture within the program. Erich has said, “There is nothing more important or rewarding than to work with and help provide guidance to our youth, especially during times like we are in today." Erich has been a champion for growing the game and providing opportunities for players who otherwise couldn’t afford the SYA program or needed the structure to develop a greater sense of purpose and discipline.
Erich received the SYA Presidents Award in 2011 for his dedication and volunteer work with the organization.

Coaching at Home

At Positive Coaching Alliance we believe life is a team sport. Given the abrupt ending of the athletic season, we want to provide all of the resources necessary to empower moms and dads everywhere to play the role of coach for that team. We couldn’t think of a better sub!
Below is a list of practical coaching exercises that parents can adapt to ensure positive experiences and positive outcomes for their children while at home:

Fill Emotional Tanks. Being couped up each day at home can be a very trying time for your children and your overall family dynamic and it’s important to know that in general, praise has a more powerful and long-lasting impact on development than criticism or correction. So much so that on the playing field we know it takes a five-to-one ratio of positive to negative input (at least) to maintain a relationship where an athlete is progressing and performing at their peak capability. Striving to maintain a five-to-one ratio may also prove to be helpful more generally if this difficult time begins to place strain on relationships.

Teach mastery by focusing on effort, learning, and mistakes (ELM). We know that athletes thrive and improve when they maintain a growth mindset and focus on what is in their immediate control. Parents can help their children acquire and maintain this way of thinking by helping them focus on what is within their immediate control and by showing them the ways in which those “controllables” are leading to improvement. Help your child learn that mistakes (especially when they are learning a new skill using maximum effort) are an essential part of the learning process and that they must “flush” a mistake from their psyche to move on to the important next play.

Be a “Double-Goal Coach.” Our fundamental model of excellent coaching is one in which the coach is constantly working to improve athletes’ skills and to help the athletes learn important life lessons. Sports can teach life lessons beautifully and vice-versa. As you coach your own children at home, help them see the points where the skills you’re developing will be useful in their daily goals as they adjust to this new normal.

Honor the Game by respecting its ROOTS. Effective coaches place value on modeling and teaching that great athletes and teams show deep respect for the R ules, O pponents, O fficials, their T eammates, and them S elves. At home parents can maximize their coaching effectiveness by modeling this respect in their conduct and in how they talk. They can point to the many examples of great athletes whose respect for these elements has paid dividends in performance, resilience, and longevity.
