SABRE GIRLS PROGRAM

Sabre Girls Program by Carissa Baier

Right now, it feels like a lifetime ago we found ourselves in the rinks cheering on our girls as they finished their season. While we have been out of the hockey rink going on almost one full month, we still have a lot of accomplishments to celebrate. Our 10s ended the season as Presidents Cup Champions and finished in 2nd place in NIHL and 4th in State. The 14s finished their season as 2nd in NIHL and 2nd in State. The 19s also finished their season as 2nd place in State. And our 12s won the trifecta as Presidents Cup Champions, NIHL Champions and State Champions! What an unbelievable end to the season by all of our girls. We cannot wait to see all those banners hanging in Rocket in the near future.
KEITH MELLEN AWARD RECIPIENT

Thi s yea r the Sabres are introducing a new award, the The Keith Mellen award. This goes to the Sabre female athlete who has given back to their community and has demonstrated outstanding individual performance and leadership skills on and off the ice.

We'd like to take a moment to congratulate Hannah Castro from our 14U team as the first ever recipient of this award . Throughout the year and her hockey career as a Sabre, Hannah has demonstrated traits, both on and off the ice, that exemplify the "Sabre Girls Hockey Way." Congratulations Hannah, a well-deserved award for a year of hard work.

We hope to see everyone back at the rinks as soon as life gets back to normal. We certainly miss our Sabre family and can't wait to see our girls back on the ice.

Coaches Corner - Staying Connected

Hopefully all are staying healthy and safe! This clearly is an unusual time. Many of us are probably still trying to figure out how to make sense of everything. Now that we are several weeks into new norms, we are reaching for some sort of balance in our life.

For many of us, it has been hockey. Beyond the ice, hockey is the one connecting piece that brought many of us together. We constantly are referring to our hockey families and friends and we yearn for the time at the rink. So the key is to find that new balance in that open calendar. There is no one right answer, but maybe look at finding a new routine. Maybe something that is new and intriguing, but yet simple.

For me, that new routine is working out with my son. I have always been active playing soccer and basketball in men's leagues and occasionally hitting the gym at work, but now those opportunities are gone. My eldest son Ben, is a high school athlete and hockey player and his PE class is centered around working out. He loved that hour in the gym every day with an endless amount of equipment and weights at his disposal. But now that is gone as well.

Since our time at home, we now work out together every morning. We don't have a fancy gym or a place to go, but we do have each other and it is fun! It is a great way to wake up every morning and immediately start the day sharing a common new experience together. And yes, I believe my son loves it as well. Everyone will have their own new routine, but now is a good time to see what is out there and find a way to connect in a new way with people.

Stay safe, healthy, and happy. We will all be back on the ice someday soon.

TONY'S TIPS

Tip #27 Off-Ice Training and Its Importance

Hello Goalies!

Times are a little different for us and everyone we know. It's a situation that has taken us by surprise but with every challenge comes an opportunity to learn more of who you are and who we are as people. There is always a positive in situations that you have to look for. With all this time now on our hands, we have a chance to focus on ourselves and make a difference in our mental and physical abilities. Hockey as a sport is one of the most demanding on your body. It requires a great amount of core strength and stability along with flexibility. You have to take care of each individually. In order to be strong on your skates you have to have a strong base. Many young skaters have trouble skating due to weakness in their ankles and quad muscles. Skaters like this will tend to take longer to develop due to not having the control and strength with their body to perform proper techniques. A goalie with a weak core will not have an ability to rotate properly to shooting lanes or stay tall in his or her butterfly. A weak core can open five-holes and give up many rebounds. Not having the ankle strength to push laterally with affect your ability to get a full controlled push causing you to end up short or not seal your five-hole in time.

All this can be avoided with a daily workout routine and now is the perfect time to make this a good habit and even a lifestyle. Strong core and stability will give a goalie more control in his butterfly by keeping the strength to keep his hips up and avoid sitting which will cause us to open holes and end up on our back or stomach after a save. Balance consists of a sensorimotor control system that includes input from sight, touch, and the vestibular system which is motion, equilibrium and spatial orientation. Overall strength and power will give you strong pushes, making you quicker in your lateral movement and ability to get to the top of the crease and takeaway angle. Skaters will have a stronger stride and ability to control their edges making them stronger on their feet and harder to push off the puck.

You have no excuses to becoming the player you have always dreamed of becoming. I myself have begun a life of fitness since we have been paused from our regular routines. I have also created Off-Ice workout videos for anyone at home looking for a starting point. Once every week I will post new off-ice videos focusing on agility, explosiveness, and core strength. It is free to skaters and goalies on my YouTube page: Coach Petrak. If anyone has a special request, please feel free to reach out to me. What you do today will affect tomorrow! I also want to take a moment to honor all the the lives and true souls of those fighting at the frontline to help keep you and our great country safe! Thank you!
