"No matter what your age, you always need your mom."
Pictured (l-r) Natasha, mother of two, Anna, my mom & me.
It was a very special Mother’s Day for me because I spent the day with my daughter and two beautiful grandchildren, even though the thought of my Mom, who passed away from COVID still saddens me, it’s such a joy to be a Grandma.
Our lives today give all of us an opportunity to be a special “Mom” to someone who needs comfort. Mother’s Day is every day. Open your heart and hug that special someone.

Lois Pope, one of America’s leading philanthropists, is recognized as one of the country’s foremost advocates for veterans, especially disabled veterans, earning her the moniker, “The Pope of Disabled Veterans.” She has made numerous generous local donations including an endowment to the Palm Beach County Food Bank for a program called Lois’ Food4kids. Her love and advocacy of animal welfare inspired her to give $1.5 million to the Tri-County Animal Rescue, the largest single donation the organization has ever received. The gift endowed a 9,000-square-foot veterinary center called the Lois Pope Pet Clinic. It was the first center in the region specifically geared to providing low-cost or free veterinary care to low-income families for their pets.
It was my honor and privilege to proclaim, April 4, 2023, to be LOIS POPE DAY in Palm Beach County.

Bringing Government to You

Boca Bridges
I brought County Government to the Boca Bridges community. Joining me were members of the County’s Engineering and Public Works Department, headed by County Engineer David Ricks.
Questions and answers on traffic issues, Lyons Road construction and Atlantic Avenue were posed by the residents and addressed and answered. I would like to thank the President of Boca Bridges Mark Schneider, Vice President Joh Schmidt and Community Association Manager Linda Roman Simpkin for welcoming me to the community.

Valencia Reserve
I would like to thank the Men’s Club for inviting me to their veterans meeting. My Dad, a WWII combat veteran taught me that the Army never leaves a soldier behind. It is important that we take care of our veterans for their service to our country. The veterans shared their stories on where they were stationed, their triumphs and their struggles. Andy Reese, of the County’s Veterans Services, answered questions and gave information about services and benefits.
The veterans were very thankful for the wealth of information shared with them and the visit was a success!

Lyons Road Construction Update
Engineering and Public Works Department
Construction Update: since March 24, 2023
- Completion of roadway work is still expected in May 2023; however as previously mentioned, this completion date does not include the intersection at Atlantic Avenue and Lyons Road due to the material delays in signal items.
- The contractor has submitted a revised Maintenance of Traffic (aka MOT) plan to switch the traffic pattern from the L-38 Canal north to 350 feet south of Atlantic Avenue. The revised submittal, which is currently under review, will switch northbound traffic to the newly constructed northbound lanes while a single southbound lane will remain in its current configuration. This will allow the contractor to place the final lift of asphalt on the unobstructed southbound lanes.
- Due to the delay in the delivery of specialized signal items, the demolition, construction, and completion of the intersection of Lyons Road and Atlantic Avenue will be delayed. PBC staff is working with the contractor to provide temporary signals at the intersection. Once installed, the temporary signals will allow the contractor to begin the demolition of existing equipment at the intersection months sooner than waiting for the delayed permanent signal items to arrive. We anticipate temporary signal installation to start in August 2023.
- Several crews have been onsite since the last update to grade the right of way and install sidewalks north of Atlantic Avenue.
- Crews were also sodding the right of way within the project limits from Linton Boulevard north to the north side of Atlantic Avenue.
- Streetlights are still scheduled to be installed by FPL on Lyons Road between Clint Moore Road and Atlantic Avenue starting in the summer of 2024.

Chair of the Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County
Please do not put rechargeable batteries in the garbage or recycling bin. Batteries need to be disposed of at one of the Solid Waste Authority's (SWA) designated centers or major retailers with drop-off locations.
Lithium batteries have been responsible for fires in transportation, garbage and recycling facilities nationwide when they become damaged by sorting and processing machinery.
In an effort to inform constituents of this potential hazard, the Board of County Commissioners, sitting as the SWA Board, recently requested SWA officials initiate a public outreach campaign concerning the proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.
Additionally, we have asked staff to explore installing specially designed disposal bins for these batteries at convenient locations countywide.
Regular alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, and 9 volts) can be placed in your garbage.

Meet Princeton, The Longest Shelter Resident
I love to run, play and chase toys. I am strong and would love a family that likes to spend time outdoors, since my favorite pastimes are playing, going for walks and doing my zoomies.
If you are interested in adopting Princeton, visit Palm Beach County Animal Care and Control Division's SNAP website here and you'll see him.

Help Animal Care & Control Clear the Kennel
May adoptions only $5
Palm Beach County Department of Public Safety’s Division of Animal Care and Control (ACC) is asking the community to help with efforts to find homes for the 56 adoptable dogs that are in the kennel. As the only open-admission shelter in the county, ACC accepts all animals in need regardless of their condition. Services are provided to lost, homeless and unwanted animals, and help is needed to continue caring for them.
The community can help by adopting or fostering. The kennel has adoptable dogs with different personalities that would suit anyone’s lifestyle. Whether looking for a big dog, small dog, playful pup or couch potato, the shelter has a perfect dog for a family. During the month of May, ACC is offering $5 adoptions to motivate the community to adopt instead of shop (#AdoptDontShop) for a furry friend. By adopting or fostering, a dog experiences time in a loving home, and space for another dog in need is created in the shelter.
If looking for a short-term commitment, ACC is encouraging residents to consider becoming a foster through the Foster2Rescue program. Through this program, foster parents take care of a pet for two to six weeks until a forever home is found through the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League. All supplies such as food, crate, leash, collar and preventatives are provided. All the foster needs to provide is some love.
PBCACC encourages those interested in fostering or adopting to meet their perfect match in person. Pets can also be viewed online at https://secure.co.palm-beach.fl.us/snap/home. The Foster and adoption application is completed in person at PBCACC. No appointment is needed.
Adoption Center hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 6 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control is located at 7100 Belvedere Road in West Palm Beach. For more information, please call 561-233-1200 or visit the website, www.pbcgov.com/animal.
