Compatriots & Friends Things are heating up in Sacramento… 105 in Sacramento… HOT! As most you already know Governor Gavin Newsom is re-opening the State of California on June 15, 2021. With the re-opening comes many opportunities including the opportunity to meet once again in person. Last month the Executive Committee and the Board met for the express purpose of discussing the possibilities of gathering again in person. The vote was 8-2 in favor of meeting in person for the month of June. Even though we typically take the month of June off we thought that it was important for us to meet in person and so we have scheduled an in person meeting for Friday, June 18, 2021 at Cattlemen’s Restaurant. If you stop and think we have not met in person since February of 2020 almost 16 months. This meeting will be a time of celebration as well as a time of re-acquainting ourselves with old friends and like-minded individuals. I believe that the SAR, especially the local chapter, serves a very important function in our society reminding Americans the importance of our Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and what does it mean to be “free men.” If you missed our last Zoom meeting you missed a very important talk by our very own Carl Ahlberg and how people are trying to re-write American history through something called The 1619 Project. This is a dangerous teaching that is making its way into our public schools. You can google to learn more about it and how it is trying to re-write American history. Carl has done a phenomenal job putting together a video presentation about American history and is making it available to every school who wants to download the videos. A BIG THANK YOU to Carl and all those that participated in making these incredible videos accurately telling the story of the birth of our nation. I hope you will make time to join us Friday, June 18, 2021 at Cattlemen’s Restaurant for some good food, great fellowship, and celebrating the Sacramento Chapter and its membership. After 14 long months of conducting our chapter meetings by video conferencing, we are pleased to announce that our dinner meetings will resume on June 18th at Cattlemen’s Restaurant, 12409 Folsom Blvd, Rancho Cordova, CA, 95742. Doors open at 6PM and the meeting starts at 7:00PM. The menu selections are as follows: Top Sirloin Steak; Teriyaki Chicken; Grilled Atlantic Salmon; Vegetarian Pasta Ravioli. Meals prices are $29 (including tax and tip) and include salad, entrée, desert and coffee, tea, or soda. No-host cocktail service is available. Valley Forge Teachers Recognition Program Compatriots, The COVID pandemic has certainly put many of our Youth and Teacher Programs in a quandary, and so it is with this program!              There is still a small window for providing me the names of teachers your chapter is sponsoring for the 2021 Valley Forge Teachers Program workshops, sponsored by the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.   These workshops will be physical events with visits to the actual sites under the tutelage of an expert docent.  The subject for this year is titled the “Philadelphia Campaign”.              There are two periods for selection:  27 June – 2 July, and 18-23 July.  The information and itinerary is on the CASSAR website at: Valley Forge Teacher Recognition Program - SAR California (californiasar.org).              Deadline for submission is 15 June.  Due to the nearness of the deadline, I will accept registration forms only, although recommendations are also nice to have.              If you have any questions, please contact me. President Hull: The next chapter meeting will be on June 18th at 7PM (Doors open at 6PM) at Cattlemen’s Restaurant, 12409, Folsom Blvd, Rancho Cordova, CA 95742. President Hull Introduced our guest speaker, member Carl Ahlberg. Carl Ahlberg discussed the History of the School Guard/Color Guard, which has been around for about 24 years. Carl became involved in this 15 years ago. This program is presented to the 5th graders at school assemblies. Several of the SAR/DAR members dressed in period clothing would go out to the schools and present stories about the American Revolution. Books and videos were left behind with the students to use in their classrooms. Carl showed pictures of the school assemblies. Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the assemblies’ were stopped, Carl decided that he would create Video’s that could be shown to the students via Zoom. So far 8 Video’s have been created covering several topics. It was brought up that these are great videos but in-school live presentations are so much better. It was suggested that we check with the National Freedom Foundation and the NASSAR to see if they may have additional videos they may have.   Don Littlefield presented the Treasurer Report. The CA State Society and the Sacramento Chapter received two matching grant checks from Intel for $16,900. These checks represent 1,690 hours of volunteer time Don has devoted to the SAR State Society and the Sacramento Chapter during 2020.  CASSAR $9,950   SASSAR $6,950  We currently have close to $50,000 in the bank. Congratulations to Compatriot and Life Member Mark Denmore Stevenson who on June 10th , celebrates his 25th year as a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Sacramento Chapter. Also congratulations are due Compatriots John William Mohamed, Joseph Edward Glidden and Life Member Eric Donald Wilt all of who celebrate 20 years in June as members of Sacrament Chapter.  The Sacramento Chapter has emerged stronger because of our loyal membership. Thank you for your support!

Intel Involved Volunteer Matching Grants

Intel Corporation (the semiconductor company) established the Intel Foundation in 1988 as a nonprofit organization to focus on grants to schools. In 1994, Intel began matching employee gifts for education, and later expanded into sponsorship of the Intel Computer Clubhouse in 2000.  Around 2007-2008, the program, known as the Intel Involved Volunteer Matching Grant Program (IIVMGP), expanded with a budget of $10,000,000 and a target of achieving 1 million volunteer hours by encouraging Intel employees to volunteer their time and expertise to 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Grants were based on $10 for each hour an employee volunteered with a nonprofit.  Don Littlefield had just joined the Sacramento Chapter of the SAR in February 2007. Intel encouraged employees to volunteer their time to nonprofits of their choice. Don chose the SAR and volunteered to become the Chapter Treasurer and Webmaster for the Sacramento Chapter. Based on Don’s volunteer hours during 2008, the Sacramento Chapter received grants totaling $3,960 in 2009.  As Don’s commitment to the Sacramento Chapter (Treasurer, Webmaster, Vice President, President, Board Member), Delta Chapter (Webmaster) and the CASSAR (Wreaths Across America, VP North, Executive VP, and President) increased, the IIVMGP grants also increased. Intel Foundation also extended the program to Intel Retiree volunteer efforts. Thus, with Don’s retirement in 2016, the Intel grants have continued each year.  Since 2008, the Sacramento Chapter has received $83,760; Delta Chapter $4,720; the California Society $24,085; and the National Society $1,300; for a total of $113,865 in grants*, all based on Don’s volunteer hours to each entity.  Since 1995, Intel employees and US Retirees have contributed nearly 18 million volunteer hours resulting in $122 million dollars in matching grants and $731 million to communities across the US.  Other large corporations may offer similar programs to their employees and retirees. Craig Anderson just learned that Chevron will also match his donations to the SAR. Check with your company and see if they have such a program. In the era of corporate and social responsibility these grant programs make a world of difference to the nonprofits they benefit.   * Volunteer hours and grants are currently managed through Intel’s agent, the Benevity Community Impact Fund.

OUR LADIES AUXILIARY PROGRAM

LADIES AUXILIARY OF THE OF THE CALIFORNIA SOCIETY    SONS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION  The purpose of the Ladies Auxiliary of the California Society Sons of the American Revolution is to maintain a nonprofit association of women interested in and supportive of the objectives and activities of that Society.   The goals of the Auxiliary are to stimulate greater interest in and support of the Society, to assist it in the promotion of the membership and furthering the historic, patriotic, and educational objectives and activities of the SAR. We also provide members of the Ladies Auxiliary a vehicle to support the society and use the time at CASSAR chapter and state meetings for service and friendship building.   Activities during the CASSAR state meetings include raffle sales and other fund raising, hospitality room support, local tours, educational and patriotic speakers, participating in LAUX business meetings and leadership, and enjoying banquets.   The members meet twice each year at the California SAR spring and fall state meetings. Money raised by the Auxiliary from dues, donations, raffles, and silent auctions goes to programs such as the CASSAR student essay and oration contests, Eagle Scout programs, and JROTC programs.   Membership is open to women related by blood or marriage to CASSAR members in good standing or members deceased while in good standing. Annual dues are $25.00 payable to Treasurer Karen Dodd, 17621 Irvine Blvd, #200, Tustin, CA  92780-3131 New members of the Ladies Auxiliary will need an application form also, so please contact Marilyn Chilton for that form.   Have a nice summer.
