Californians for Pesticide Reform (CPR) is holding a "Ban Chlorpyrifos in California!" Sacramento Day of Action on Wednesday July 12 from 11am to 3:30pm,
and you're invited!
On March 29, US EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt defied his own scientists and refused to ban Dow Chemical's brain-harming organophosphate pesticide chlorpyrifos.
More than a million pounds of this hazardous pesticide are used each year in California - even though it was banned for home use in 2001 because it harms the brain development of young children. More than a third of that total is used in just two counties - Kern and Fresno. Recent studies show that children of mothers exposed to the pesticide during pregnancy have a threefold increase in autism and significant IQ loss by age 7.
After years of stalling, and under a court order to make a decision, the EPA in November recommended a total federal ban of chlorpyrifos b
ecause of its extreme neurotoxicity. But Trump's appointee refused to implement the ban, leaving the fate of California's rural children in the hands of the state.
On July 12, we will take our message to the Department of Pesticide Regulation: the science is clear, and the state must act immediately to eliminate this threat to children's health and potential.
