September 2024

 Greetings Compatriots and Friends,

I want to extend my heartfelt thanks in advance to everyone for the payment of your annual dues, the statements will be out shortly. This represents your strong and continued financial support of the Sons of the American Revolution and your Sacramento Chapter. By investing in your membership, you not only support our educational and historical initiatives but also strengthen the bonds of our shared heritage. Your commitment is deeply appreciated and vital to our collective efforts, and we are profoundly grateful for your dedication to our shared cause. Thank you for being an essential part of this enduring journey.

We begin Fall on the heels of an excellent August Chapter business meeting. We had a really good turnout, a lively discussion and exchanged good ideas for planning the future activities of the Chapter as we approach 2025. Thank you to all the members who attended, and those that joined us in spirit.

Audrey Perry Martin will be our speaker at the September Dinner meeting which promises to be fascinating and timely. Audrey is an election lawyer and has taught election law. She will provide an overview to how our Republic and system work which was crafted during the American Revolution. And I suspect she will be prepared to answer questions from our members and guests.

Thank you for all that you have done, and all that you will do. Let’s make 2024 & 2025 a great year for the Sacramento Chapter of the SAR leading up to our country’s 250th birthday. We can only do this with YOU.

2024 Graduate Teacher's Traveling Workshop

The French and Indian War

Each year, Founding Forward (formerly Freedoms Foundation) puts on a series of American History workshops during the summer break for graduate teachers. The California Society SAR sponsors two teachers per year as part of their Valley Forge Teacher Recognition program. This year, the Sacramento Chapter also sponsored one teacher as part of the Christopher J Stephenson Memorial Scholarship.

Two teachers from Deterding Elementary in Carmichael, CA attended the Founding Forward (Formerly Freedoms Foundation) graduate teachers traveling workshop on the French and Indian War in Pennsylvania. One teacher, Cory Bridges, was sponsored by the California Society’s Teacher Recognition Program chaired by Bob Taylor, the other, Gretchen Johnson was sponsored by the Sacramento Chapter. We recently received a note from Cory Bridges describing his experience:

“I wanted to thank you for selecting me to attend the trip to Pennsylvania in July. I have never been able to attend one of these trips as a teacher, and it was amazing. It was especially great to be able to attend with Gretchen Johnson, my partner-teacher here at Deterding.

Gretchen and I flew in a day early so that we could tour Pittsburg. I was very impressed with the city of Pittsburg and just how clean and safe their downtown area was in comparison to some other cities I’ve been to.

When the program started, we were surprised at how many teachers there were from California. Over the week, we toured many different French and Indian War sites and learned a lot of facts about the conflict that we were unaware of beforehand. Getting to be at the battle sites was certainly valuable, but the knowledge that the trip leaders had was what really put this trip over the top for me. Gretchen and I talked often about how we couldn’t wait to put the things we had learned from this trip into action in our classrooms, while also lamenting the fact that we didn’t know this information for our lessons in the past. We certainly put in a lot of miles in the bus as we traveled around Western Pennsylvania and even made it into Maryland for a brief time. One of our stops, which I believe was the day we toured Fort Ligonier, was to the Flight 93 memorial. This was a very emotional, but powerful, part of our trip. We finished our week at the Heinz Museum in Pittsburg; another stop that I would highly recommend and wish we had more time to tour.

We have many pictures from our week and would love to share those at some point and relay some of the historical information we learned. Thank you so much for selecting me to go on this trip; it was one of the highlights of my summer.”

Your dues fund many SAR youth programs that educate young people about patriotism and their American Heritage. Your support is critical to continuing these programs:

The Sacramento Chapter members are very active in promoting the “Spirit of 76” in our community. In 2024,

  • We have conducted 8 historical presentations to 5th grade assemblies in 7 schools in colonial attire.

  • We have sponsored 1 teacher from Deterding Elementary to attend graduate teacher workshop on the French and Indian War in Pennsylvania, and we recommended another teacher from the same school who was sponsored by the California Society, SAR. These teachers will be featured at a fall dinner meeting to share their experiences and how this program has affected their teaching.

  •  We have implemented the Sacramento Chapter SAR 1776 Book Challenge for the 2023-2024 school year. In the first year we raised $13297.50 in community donations, and were able to provide 1665 Books to 5thgrade classrooms in the greater Sacramento Area that will potentially impact nearly 10,000 students over the life of the books.

  • We have sponsored 2 high school students to attend Founding Forward’s Spirit of America Youth Leadership Program at Valley Forge, PA. A third student from our area was sponsored by the California Society, SAR

  • We have had 9 High Schools participate in the SAR Outstanding JROTC Cadet Program, 2 Sea Cadet Divisions participate the Outstanding Sea Cadets Program, and 2 Universities participate in the Outstanding ROTC Cadet Program. The winner of our chapter’s JROTC Enhanced Program was a student from Yuba City High School who took 3rd place in the state competition. 2nd place in this program was awarded to a student from Del Campo High School.

Besides your financial support to continue these programs, your volunteer time is critical to make these programs successful. Please consider giving a few hours a year to help with these programs. Please contact any of our chapter officers for more information on how you can help.
