Each year, Founding Forward (formerly Freedoms Foundation) puts on a series of American History workshops during the summer break for graduate teachers. The California Society SAR sponsors two teachers per year as part of their Valley Forge Teacher Recognition program. This year, the Sacramento Chapter also sponsored one teacher as part of the Christopher J Stephenson Memorial Scholarship.
Two teachers from Deterding Elementary in Carmichael, CA attended the Founding Forward (Formerly Freedoms Foundation) graduate teachers traveling workshop on the French and Indian War in Pennsylvania. One teacher, Cory Bridges, was sponsored by the California Society’s Teacher Recognition Program chaired by Bob Taylor, the other, Gretchen Johnson was sponsored by the Sacramento Chapter. We recently received a note from Cory Bridges describing his experience:
“I wanted to thank you for selecting me to attend the trip to Pennsylvania in July. I have never been able to attend one of these trips as a teacher, and it was amazing. It was especially great to be able to attend with Gretchen Johnson, my partner-teacher here at Deterding.
Gretchen and I flew in a day early so that we could tour Pittsburg. I was very impressed with the city of Pittsburg and just how clean and safe their downtown area was in comparison to some other cities I’ve been to.
When the program started, we were surprised at how many teachers there were from California. Over the week, we toured many different French and Indian War sites and learned a lot of facts about the conflict that we were unaware of beforehand. Getting to be at the battle sites was certainly valuable, but the knowledge that the trip leaders had was what really put this trip over the top for me. Gretchen and I talked often about how we couldn’t wait to put the things we had learned from this trip into action in our classrooms, while also lamenting the fact that we didn’t know this information for our lessons in the past. We certainly put in a lot of miles in the bus as we traveled around Western Pennsylvania and even made it into Maryland for a brief time. One of our stops, which I believe was the day we toured Fort Ligonier, was to the Flight 93 memorial. This was a very emotional, but powerful, part of our trip. We finished our week at the Heinz Museum in Pittsburg; another stop that I would highly recommend and wish we had more time to tour.
We have many pictures from our week and would love to share those at some point and relay some of the historical information we learned. Thank you so much for selecting me to go on this trip; it was one of the highlights of my summer.”
