August 2024

Greetings Compatriots and Friends,

702 Days!!! That is the number of days until our country’s 250th birthday.

I hope everyone is enjoying the Summer and having opportunities to spend time with family and friends, relax, and maybe travel.

During our Chapter’s break from regular meetings, we’ve hosted our successful 2nd annual picnic and participated in two 4th of July community parade events in Folsom and Carmichael.

As we close in on August and the end of Summer, it is time to turn our attention to the future. We have a Chapter business meeting scheduled coming up on Saturday, August 17th at 9:00am at Cattleman’s on Folsom Blvd. at Hazel. Please plan on attending.

This will be our Annual Planning Meeting to set the direction for the Chapter for the coming year and plan our activities and outreach also. This is your Chapter and your ideas, suggestions and energy is valuable and respected.

Thank you for all that you have done, and all that you will do. Let’s make 2024 & 2025 a great year for the Sacramento Chapter of the SAR leading up to our country’s 250th birthday. We can only do this with YOU.

In Fellowship,

Jon Wroten, President

CASSAR President Don Littlefield and Thomas Jefferson Chapter President Daniel Shrutz attended the interment of WW2 veteran PFC Marcus A. Engesser on July 20th 2024 in Vallejo.

We only had one member march in the Carmichael 4th of July parade this year. Thanks to Don Littlefield for representing the SAR in this long time community event. The Carmichael Times gave the event great press including the photo from the 2022 parade.

Our School Guard members had a limited schedule this year but still managed to present to a number of schools including Ridgeview Elementary in Granite Bay. We recently received an envelope with 125 letters from Ridgeview students thanking SAR and DAR members for visiting their school and describing what they learned.

Highlights:

  • Carl Ahlberg demonstrated with paper how Betsy Ross could fold and cut out a five point star with one cut with scissors. This was a huge hit with the students. Over 30% of the student responses were written on a paper 5 pointed star and many letters incorporated a picture of a 5 pointed star.

  • The stories of women spies was another big hit. A large number of the letters talked about how much they enjoyed stories of women's contributions to the American Revolution.

  • Children's toys and replica colonial artifacts were also very popular with all of the students.

  • Stories of historical events were popular including the role of African Americans in our fight for independence

Thanks to all of the volunteers who donated their time to this program. They truly helped students develop a deeper understanding of their American heritage.

Cyber Scams

If you receive an email from a purported Compatriot in need of help that is unsigned, with no personal contact information seeking contributions to any type of fundraising site; or an email addressing you by name from another member of your Chapter requesting the expenditure of funds or the purchase of gift cards, consider it a hoax. These messages are getting more sophisticated and may even include the unauthorized use of the SAR logo and/or a pseudo SAR email address.
