February 2023
Welcome Compatriots to 2023 and a new officer corps. Thank you for the honor of being selected to serve as Chapter President.

Being fairly new to the Chapter I will make a quick introduction. I was born and raised in Marin County. There I met my future wife while we were both in high school. We both attended and are alumni of UC Davis. I earned my master’s degree in Earth Sciences from Montana State University, Bozeman. We bought our home in Davis in 2002 and have raised our two teenage daughters there. I currently do environmental code compliance for the City of Davis.

I have always been interested in genealogy and family history. We were told many stories growing up about our ancestors. Prior to the pandemic I had constructed a sizable family tree, but during the pandemic I took the opportunity to formally document some ancestral lines and in addition to SAR, I joined the Mayflower Society and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Our February business meeting is coming up on the 18th. We have a very full agenda and I hope to see as many of you there as possible. We will be setting some goals for the future of the Chapter and along with that, long term strategies to increase our membership and participation. I look forward to seeing you then. Thank you again for the honor and duty you have entrusted with me.

2023 Sacramento County History Day (SCHD) competition is scheduled for Saturday, March 4that Inderkum High School in Natomas. This year, students in 4th through 12 grades will have the opportunity to explore historical topics and present their findings in a variety of formats including, exhibits, papers, performances, documentaries, and websites. The theme this year is “Frontiers in History: People, Places, Ideas.”

“Friendly, service-oriented community members with an interest in history are invited to serve as judges at the competition. Judges evaluate student entries and provide positive feedback to help them advance to the state competition in April. Judge training takes place that morning, and breakfast and lunch are provided. It’s a fun day for all, and one that allows some of the best and brightest in our community to shine!”

For the past several years, members of the Sacramento Chapter SAR have volunteered to participate in this event both at the local and state levels and helped make this event a success.

If you receive an email from a purported Compatriot in need of help that is unsigned, with no personal contact information seeking contributions to any type of fundraising site; or an email addressing you by name from another member of your Chapter requesting the expenditure of funds or the purchase of gift cards, consider it a hoax. These messages are getting more sophisticated and may even include the unauthorized use of the SAR logo and/or a pseudo SAR email address.
