September 2023

The colonists came together for a common goal to win independence and take control over their destiny.

Many of our compatriots came together in fellowship at our chapter business meeting on August 19th. Our common purpose is service to the goals and principles of the Sons of the American Revolution by promoting patriotism, serving our communities and educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of our Country.

I was so impressed and awestruck as Compatriot Craig Anderson talked about the programs and activities our chapter is involved in.

Given our active membership size, we are mighty!

There were more than 40 bullet-point items on the list Craig presented covering community events, color guard, America 250, School “Living history” presentations, youth programs, teacher recognition, flag certificates and veteran recognition.

And these do not even include our latest 1776 Book Challenge project to place 1776 books in the hands of 5thgrade teachers. This is being accomplished with about 35 – 40 active members out of our total membership roster of 185.

Imagine what we could accomplish with more active members.

First, I want to thank everyone for their membership and support that you provide in time, participation, committee volunteerism, and funding. These are all very important and essential.

Second, I would ask for new blood. The lifeblood of any organization is an engaged and active membership which also requires fresh ideas and new blood. Each of us knows of friends, family members, or contacts through other organizations that may qualify for membership in the SAR. Please take the opportunity to encourage others to join and participate. Just 10 new active members would increase our contributions and outreach by 25%.

Do you know one person you could share the SAR story with?

Finally, I would ask that each of us recommits to participating a little more than we have during the past year. Just a little effort goes a long way. Just 1 hour a month from our 185 members would result in more than 2,200 hours over the course of the next year.

Imagine what we could accomplish. I personally have always found that the value and benefit I receive is equal to the time and commitment I put into something. There is so much value the SAR offers, not just to ourselves, but to future generations.

Please participate and contribute in whatever way you are able and that calls to you.

In fellowship, Jon Wroten

The SAR Mission

“Patriotism - History – Education”

Sacramento Chapter's 1776 Book Challenge is Officially Underway.

The 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence is just around the corner - July 4th, 2026. Our goal is to provide at least 1776 books to classrooms written for 5th grade students that inspire patriotism and a love of our American Heritage. Each teacher will receive a classroom set of books that can be used for years to come.

Teachers participating in the program will make these books available to their students and encourage them to read and report out on what they have read. Where possible, teachers can select the books that they want for their classrooms.

We need your help!

Join the 1776 Book Challenge by donating funds that will enable us to purchase books for this program. For each $10 donated, we will place a book plate with your name or your business name in each book.

Donors may elect to sponsor 1 or more 5th grade classrooms with a donation of $350 each by specifying the teacher's name and school.

You may donate by sending your check to Sacramento SAR, P.O. Box 6664, Folsom, CA. 95763-6664. Open and print the donation form at the link below:

The National Society’s Vice President General for the Western Region, Robert P. Moore will be joining us and is looking forward to meeting and talking with our members.

Please mark your calendars

Douglas Lee Poore NSSAR #227457

Douglas Lee Poore's application was approved on August 11, 2023; he was formally inducted into the Sacramento Chapter, by EVP Jon Wroten and Secretary Jim Faulkinbury, at our August business meeting.

Douglas is a retired United States Air Force MSGT, serving our country for 24 years. We are pleased that Doug took an active part in our planning meeting, and we are looking forward to him working with us to help accomplish our societies goals.

Doug's patriot ancestor was Zophar Mack a Sergeant in New Hampshire service.

John Glover

When Washington arrived in Boston in April 1776 to take command of the Continental Army, he found that his command consisted of several thousand untrained, undisciplined Militia. Militia leaders were elected by popular vote, and most had no experience leading troops in battle. He found that it was a rabble masqueradingas an army.

An exception that caught Washington eye was John Glover, a mariner who commanded a militia unit from Marblehead, Mass, and as a mariner and ship owner had instilled in his troops the high degree of discipline and order typically found aboard ships. This was in stark contrast to most of the Militia units that had laid siege to the British Troops in Boston. Washington took an instant liking to Glover.

When the British abandoned Boston, many of the militia units surrounding Boston went back to their families and homes, and Washington marched what was left of his army south to New York City - which he rightly assumed would be the next British target. After arriving in New York, Washington began to recruit his army and soon sent for John Glover and his Marbleheaders.

Following the Battle of Long Island on August 27th, the Marbleheaders were ordered to Long Island where they took up positions between Fort Putman and Wallabout Bay. The following day, Washington ordered them to evacuate his troops from Long Island. The evening of August 29th, under the cover of fog and inclement weather, John Glover and his Marbleheaders, now known as the 14th Continental Regiment, ferried Washington's entire army, including horses, artillery, and supplies across the East River without losing a single life, without detection by the British Army, and saved the American Army and perhaps the American Revolution.

During Washingtons retreat from New York City, John Glover’s regiment took an active part in the actions against the British at Kip’s Bay, Pell’s Point, and White Plains helping to prevent the British from cutting off his retreat.

After suffering defeats at Long Island, White Plains, Fort Washington, and Fort Lee, Washington’s Army retreated west to Pennsylvania. He had lost over 5000 of his troops in these battles and morale was low. Enlistments for many of his regiments were set to expire at the end of the year. His only hope to keep his army together was to have a victory against the British before these troops left the service. Once again, he called on John Glover whose men successfully ferried the American army across the Delaware River in the evening of December 25th, 1776, and allowed Washington’s historical victory at Trenton, New Jersey.

Glover and his Marbleheader’s roles at the Battle of Long Island and Trenton were unquestionably key elements that helped keep Washington’s Army together in the early days of the war and contributed to saving the American Revolution.
