Sacred Groves Update

Dear Supporters of Sacred Groves,

With three funeral homes closing in Humboldt County (see sidebar) Sacred Groves is committed to offering green burial services as a needed option for our local community members. As we press forward through numerous pre-opening requirements, we are also here to help local families navigate their current local options. Please feel free to contact us by email.

Botanical Survey Update

Sacred Groves Advisory Board member and professional botanist Jennifer Wheeler (pictured above) recently conducted a second botanical assessment of our proposed Kneeland natural burial ground. The site includes:

  • 28 acres of naturalized grassland
  • 17 acres of mixed forest, home to native Douglas fir, tan oak, bay laurel, madrone, canyon live oak, white oak, and chinquapin.

Jennifer served as a federal botanist for nearly 30 years and holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Rangeland Resource Science with an emphasis in botany from Cal Poly Humboldt. She currently enjoys her family, garden, and entrepreneurial pursuits with natural lip balms. You can follow Jennifer's botanical adventures and life musings on her Substack, Getting Dirty in the Garden. Thank you for helping Sacred Groves get one step closer to opening, Jennifer!

Jennifer Wheeler and Kneeland landowner Eric Almquist walk the prairie area where family memorial groves will be established.

Sacred Groves Sponsors California Home Funeral Website

Home funerals and vigils are making a major comeback as families and their communities seek ways to honor and reclaim responsibility for after-death care.

Prior to the birth of the modern funeral industry during the American Civil War, home funerals were the norm, where family members and their closest community took responsibility for after-death care.

Sacred Groves Advisory Board member Lee Webster, a renowned expert and educator in green burial and home funerals, is helping families navigate home funerals through state-specific websites, such as the one she created for her home state of New Hampshire (nhfuneral.org).

Now, with the support of Sacred Groves, her next project is to create a home funeral site for California. The site will provide clear, accessible guidance for family-directed after-death care. Sacred Groves will sponsor the site and keep it up-to-date to ensure its ongoing usefulness for California families.

Webster was recently featured in a New York Times article, "When I Go, I'm Going Green- More Americans are Choosing Burials in which Everything is Biodegradable."

🎉 Survey Raffle Winner!

We’re pleased to announce the second raffle winner from our pool of community survey respondents. Congratulations, Steve Madrone! You’ve won a printed copy of A Photographic Exploration of Wigi (currently called Humboldt Bay) — a stunning work by Sacred Groves Advisory Board member Aldaron Laird.

Haven’t taken the survey yet? It's not too late. We’ll share insights once we reach 100 responses.

A Shifting Landscape:

Humboldt Loses Three

Out-of-State Funeral Homes

Funeral and death care options narrowed in Humboldt County this June when three full-service funeral homes announced they will close, and are no longer accepting new clients. Sanders Funeral Home was the oldest of the three, serving local families for nearly 120 years.

All three were owned by an out-of-state company that cited financial losses due to a growing preference for cremation over traditional burial. Collectively they handled approximately 500 cases each year. That leaves Goble's Fortuna Mortuary of Fortuna and Ayres Family Cremation of Eureka as the sole remaining funeral homes in Humboldt County. Both are locally-owned and prepared for an increase in calls.

Families that prepaid for services with the closed funeral homes are protected, and can have their plans transferred to Ayres or Goble's. While these closures may present challenges for families, it can also open up conversations about alternative approaches to after-death care.

After-Death Care Options in Humboldt County- Simplified

Humboldt's two remaining funeral homes can provide all the required documentation and after-death care needed, but families also have the right to do some or all of these steps themselves.

The First 24 Hours

A deceased person's body typically needs proper refrigeration within 24 hours of death to slow decomposition while required documentation and arrangements are made. Families may use a funeral home, or keep the body at home with Techni-Ice or dry ice.

Option 1: Call a Funeral Home

(for full of partial funeral services)

Humboldt residents may call Ayres Family Cremation or Goble's Fortuna Mortuary to arrange for cold storage while making final arrangements. Out-of-county funeral homes can also be used, though costs increase with distance.

  • Bodies can be stored at funeral homes, then transported home for after-death care
  • For a small fee, funeral homes can handle the complicated task of securing death certificates and transportation permits for families.
  • Some funeral homes may allow families to perform after-death care tasks at their facilities.
  • Once the Sacred Groves Kneeland burial ground is open, Ayres Family Cremation will offer our burial services as an option to clients.

Option 2: Home Funeral with Techni-Ice or Dry Ice

A home funeral is when families and friends of the deceased provide after-death care, rather than Funeral Home professionals.

Whether this is the best option for your family is a matter of personal choice. While there are several steps involved, there are also many resources available to help navigate them.

If you are keeping the body at home or a place designated for a home funeral for over 24 hours, you will need to keep it cold. Techni-Ice (reusable gel packs) offers safe, easy cooling for family use, while dry ice provides longer-lasting cooling but requires careful handling due to extreme temperatures.
