Good day SHCS families –
Here we are, at the end of the first quarter of this academic year. The systems are all in place and rolling well. The students have been engaged in their learning. The teachers are enjoying their new classes. Of course, we have had our challenges with COVID but the school community has responded well. I have to be honest, the staff was running a bit thin during these days but we are all back and 100%. The team helped carry the load for each other many days to make sure great education continued. I appreciate all of them for their dedication and hard work.
Newsletter – Our school newsletter will be published once a month and this is the first monthly issue. We will focus on applauding all the good things that have happened the previous month and take a look ahead to our up and coming month.
Flu Shots – we kick off the month of October with our Flu Shots on October 1st. I know you all got a form to fill out if you are electing to have your student(s) receive a flu shot. No shot will be administered to a student if they do have the form filled out by the parents.
Next Week – Short Week –
Wednesday (October 6th) is a NOON dismissal and there will NOT be aftercare. Also note, there is no lunch period served on this day. This afternoon will be spent with all of the staff administrative training.
Thursday (October 7th) is NWEA MAP training for our teachers
Friday (October 8th) – Staff starts their 3 day weekend.
Columbus Day (Monday, October 11th) – NO School – Parent-Teacher Conferences will be on Monday, October 11th. A Sign-Up Genius will be coming out soon. I encourage all families to sign up for a conference.
School Advisory Board – I have had a number of people let me know they are interested to participate with the School Advisory Board. If you are still interested and have not responded, please let me know. The first meeting is Thursday, October 14th at 6:00 pm in the school Art Room.
Teacher of the Week – a few of the 3rd-grade students thought it was important to recognize teachers for all of their hard work. Of course, these 3rd graders wanted Mrs. Richardson recognized so she is our first Teacher of the Week. The students will get an opportunity to let me know whom they would like to be the Teacher of the Week. Our hard-working teachers need all the love they can get and it is fun for the students to be excited to let me know that their teacher deserves this honor.
Virtues in Practice – our October virtue we will be concentrating on is Studiousness – seeking knowledge to grow closer to the truth. I look forward to a month filled with this virtue in all students here at Sacred Heart.
Halloween Carnival – (October 29th) the Home and School Association is putting together a fun event for our students this year. There will be more information to follow on the details of this event. We will also plan to have the Character Parade this year. It will be run a bit differently to balance our Carnival and the Parade. There will be more information to follow on this as well (soon).
Choir Classes – we have started a Middle School Choir this year and it is going well so we are going to add a K/1/2 Choir and a 3/4/5 Choir. All students will be participating in these choirs during the academic day. We have strategically placed these classes to not impact any of the regular academic time. We are fortunate to have Mrs. McDavitt and all of her musical gifts to lead this endeavor. The first performance will be on Veterans Day at 9 am. Please mark your calendars to come out to watch this concert.
I look forward to an October filled with students dedicated to the virtue of studiousness and some fun events as well.
The SHCS team is dedicated to the spiritual, academic, and physical development of all of our SH students. If you have any questions or concerns, please send me an email at shsprincipal2016@gmail.com. If you would like to meet in person, please call the front desk to make an appointment.
In Christ,
Al Chromy

GRACE Scholars is the only Student Scholarship Organization (SSO) that exclusively supports Catholic education. It allows taxpayers in Georgia to contribute to GRACE and receive a 100% tax credit on their state income taxes. This is a no-cost gift! Money that would have gone to the state can now support Catholic Schools in Georgia. A donor can designate funds to a specific GRACE participating school. The donation can directly benefit Sacred Heart Catholic School students!
The Department of Revenue pre-approved a Qualified Education Expense Credit Cap of $100 million. For pre-approvals processed to date, $82,448,433 of the $100 million cap has been committed. As such there is $17,551,567 remaining in the cap.
The goal of the GRACE Scholars program is to afford qualifying families a quality education while providing donors with an opportunity to use their tax dollars towards Catholic school scholarships. Click here to learn more.

VIRTUE IS NOT SOMETHING TO KNOW, BUT TO DO.
For October all students will learn about the virtue of
Studiousness: Seeking knowledge to grow closer to Truth
PreK-2nd Grade: St. Albert the Great - Feast Day November 11 - Saint Albert loved to study the world God created, especially all of the flowers, trees, and animals. The more Saint Albert learned about nature, the more he loved and praised God for His creation! Knowing more about creation helped him grow in loving what was real- the Truth. And loving the Truth means loving God. Because of his study of nature, St. Albert was also one of the first people to be called a scientist! Saint Albert joined the Order of Preachers (the Dominicans) and became a great teacher. But even before he was a great teacher, he was always a great student!
Grades 3-5: St. Thomas Aquinas - Feast Day January 28 - When Saint Thomas Aquinas was five his parents sent him to be a student in a rich monastery. Even at that age, Saint Thomas was very smart, and asked his teachers, " What is God?" Saint Thomas' parents wanted him to become a monk at an important monastery, and to be the abbot, or superior. But one day Thomas met the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans, and knew that God was calling him to join this new religious community. His family was unhappy with this because Dominicans were poor, and Thomas would be a beggar instead of a powerful man. They tried everything they could to stop him, but Saint Thoms won and became a Dominican.
Grades 6-8: St. Edith Stein - Feast Day August 9 - Edith Stein was a young Jewish philosopher. She read the biography of Saint Teresa of Avila and declared "This is Truth." She demonstrated extraordinary intellectual gifts from a young age. However, by the age of 13, she had come to doubt the existence of God and eventually abandoned all practice of Judaism. Edith's strong desire to know the truths of human existence led her to study philosophy, and she completed a doctorate in the subject by age 25. Throughout her academic career, Edith was intrigued by the strong Catholic faith of some of her equally learned friends. Undertaking to know the truths of Catholicism, Edith affirmed the necessary relationship between faith and reason and was baptized into the Catholic Church in 1922. Responding to the call of consecrated life, Edith entered the Carmelite Order in 1934 and took the name Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Throughout the year, our students, Pre-K through 8th grade, will work through a study of virtues to spiritually grow through understanding and action of our Christian virtues. Each month the same virtue is taught across all grade levels, but primary, elementary and middle school ages will learn about different saints regarding the virtue of the month.
For the 2021-2022 school term we have the Year of HOPE upon us. At SHCS we focus on the idea that "faith works" (Gal 5:6) and emphasize service projects. Where again, a virtue is not something to know, but to DO.
