We were deeply saddened to learn that Shawn Norrie, a former employee, passed away on June 16, 2022, after a short battle with cancer.
Shawn worked for us for about 3 years on Charlie Wadleigh's crew. He worked on many projects, including Ontario County Landfill, Clinton County Landfill, Waste USA Landfill, as well as on many of the Burlington demos, including Moran and Founder's Hall.
At the end of the 2021 season, Shawn asked to be laid off to care for his mother, who was battling cancer. He was diagnosed with cancer himself shortly after. His mother called to let us know he had passed from the disease. We are incredibly sad about his passing. Shawn was a valued and admired member of our team, and he will be greatly missed.

Shawn's family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with Shawn's funeral expenses. If you have the ability, please consider making a donation. We will keep you updated about any scheduled services/celebration of life gatherings.
Please keep Shawn's family in your thoughts during this difficult time.

Safety Topic: Heat Illness
Vermont data indicates that emergency department visits for heat-related illnesses begin to increase when temperatures reach the mid-to-upper 80s, with impacts getting progressively worse as temperatures rise into the 90s. Exposure to heat can cause illness and death. This past week alone, over 2,000 cattle died due to the heat in Kansas.
In 2022, we have seen record temperatures in parts of the US, and warmer weather is still yet to come.
There are precautions that can be taken any time temperatures are high and the job involves physical work.

Robbie Towle was doing a site look-over before starting to work in a new area of the substation when he noticed one of the insulators was broken. He brought it to the attention of VELCO before the work began. This could have led to bigger issues if there was a fault on the line, and the insulator may not have worked properly while we were working in this area.
If you look closely at the center insulator, you can see that it is chipped on the top. This is an easy thing to overlook, but a very important issue to identify.

While Cole Jacques and Mike Barger were traveling around perimeter road at Newport Landfill, Cole noticed boulders tumbling down the slope, caused by a bulldozer at the top that was pushing cover down the slope.
Cole alerted Mike of the boulders, and they halted travel to be a safe distance from the boulders' path across the road.
