London, 10 February 2016 (Wednesday)
6:00PM - 9:00PM
Ambassadors Bloomsbury, 12 Upper Woburn Place, WC1H 0HX
At this workshop, our goal is to consider how sadistic and masochistic perversions expressed and enacted by clients may in fact be coping mechanisms for unbearable feelings of anxiety. Using a psychoanalytical framework, we aim to establish if these perverse manifestations may be expressions of Trauma and / or sub-optimal parental relations. Overall, our focus will be on comprehending how psychotherapeutic techniques can have beneficial effects for clients who struggle with the impact of perversions on themselves and others.
Of value to psychotherapists, psychologists and counsellors, the workshop helps us make sense of the aetiology of sadism, masochism and concurrent manifestations of aggressive behaviour; and offers us an opportunity to utilise such comprehension for interpreting a client's pathology. The workshop considers examples of working with both adults and young people who have emerging or fully developed sadistic and masochistic ways of relating.

Workshop Schedule
6:00PM: Session 1:
What explains Sadism and Masochism?
In this first session, we will explore the way that aggression can become sexualised and manifest in Sadism and Masochism. Also, we focus on understanding how Sadism and Masochism have roots in early years of development.
6:45PM: Session 2: Assessment and therapy - the relevance of psychoanalytic techniques In the second session we will focus on common assessment and treatment responses in mental health settings. We will then look at some of the psychoanalytic theory that can help illuminate this area and start to think about the impact of sadism and masochism at an individual and societal level.
7:30PM: Coffee Break
7:45PM: Session 3: Sexual perversion in the consulting room
Following on from the first half, we will explore how sadism and masochism manifest directly and indirectly in the consulting room. We will also consider the expression of sadistic and masochistic fantasies and ways of relating to others; and how these appear in the context of the therapeutic relationship. Clinical material will help to demonstrate the extent of these manifestations and highlight the therapeutic techniques that we can consider in such situations.
