Dr. Velma Wilson

Austin ISD Instructional Leadership Coach
Dr. Velma R. Wilson’s career in education has spanned over 40 years. She began as a middle school teacher in the Chicago Public Schools and continued on in the following roles: reading resource teacher, assistant principal, staff developer, curriculum writer, principal, adjunct professor, assistant superintendent, and currently an educational consultant. Dr. Wilson also served as the chairman of the Emmanuel Christian School Board in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout her career in education she has been actively involved in the development and mentoring of teachers and administrators.
Dr. Wilson served as the principal of two “high needs” campuses (Arthur Ashe Elementary, Chicago Public Schools and Barbara Jordan Elementary, Austin ISD). During her tenures as principal in Chicago and then in Austin, she was able to partner with two outstanding universities (DePaul University, Chicago, Illinois and University of Texas, Austin, Texas). Professional development schools were established on both campuses. Both staffs and students were supported by interns and researchers in implementing “best instructional practices”. She also served on the faculty of both Schools of Education. She was privileged to work with several highly respected educators; Dean Barbara Sizemore at DePaul University, Dr. Sharon Evans, Director of Career Services and Field Experiences, University of Texas, and Dr. Lonnie Wagstaff in Educational Administration, University of Texas. During her tenure as principal of Barbara Jordan, she was instrumental in securing partnerships with the business communities to support the school’s educational initiatives and programs. Some of those partnerships included: IBM, Motorola, MCI, Koch Refineries, Budweiser, and the City of Austin, Convention and Tourism.
Dr. Wilson is currently with several AISD schools (including Sadler Means Middle School) as an Instructional Leadership Coach.
Bertha Sadler Means Young Women's Leadership Academy is an all-girls public school in East Austin, TX. The teachers and staff at Sadler Means are entirely invested in providing our students with whole-child learning experiences and leadership opportunities. Sadler Means fosters sisterhood, integrity, wellness, and college readiness among students, many first-generation. This school is a special opportunity for girls of Austin, Texas to grow and progress during the critical years of middle school.

Sadler Means YWLA is named after Bertha Sadler Means, who is known for her work as a businesswoman, educator and civil rights activist. The leaders on our campus strive to be activists ourselves. We fight for equitable opportunities for the female students of our community.

Sadler Means is a Title I Middle School in Austin ISD. Families in the community opt-in to attend our all-girls school. Over 90% of our young women leaders come from economically disadvantaged families and 55% of our students are English Language Learners. We need strong community partners like you to help support our mission and vision to help us guide our young women leaders to success.
