Dear Friends of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue,
Many thanks to all who joined us at LabFest 2021, helping make it such a success -- all to support the Labs! We had a great turnout on a beautiful August day that included both Lab lovers and happy frolicking Labs.
A special thank you as well to our LabFest 2021 committee for all their hard and very creative work organizing the event and Silent Auction: Polly Kruse, Mary Downs, and Jaime Kostelnik. We are also grateful for all the volunteers who helped with the festivities!
Visit us on Facebook for tons of wonderful photos and comments about the day.

My Name is: Murphy; 7 years old
Medical Profile: Skin and Ear Infections, Allergies, Fractured Teeth
My Story: I was one grateful pup when I was rescued from an Arkansas shelter. Although I’m an affectionate, mellow soul who gets along with everyone, no one was going to adopt me. I was a neglected mess. Big patches of my chocolate coat were missing from a raging skin infection. I smelled none too sweet, my ears were infected, and all my front teeth were worn and broken with their roots exposed. However, I'm happy to report that now I'm well on the road to recovery - thanks to Safe Harbor and their rescue partners, expert vets, and my amazing fosters who give me special baths. I'm ready for my forever home!

Dear Labby: Me? Exercise Equipment?
|
|
Dear Labby is ready to offer advice on all matters "Labby."
|
|
Dear Labby:
My dad said to me the other day, “Boomer, you are the best exercise equipment I’ve ever had.”
Good heavens, what in the world is he talking about? I’m a Lab, not a treadmill!
~Boomer
|
|
Dear Boomer:
To remain healthy, people need to get a couple hours of exercise in every week. And, guess what? Those who have a dog are far more likely to get that exercise in than their dog-less pals. Part of their dog-loving lifestyle is about taking us for walks or getting out and about with us in other active ways. Just getting outside and walking in a natural environment is good for both their mental health and ours too. After all, you can’t feel the sunshine on your shoulders or wind in your fur on a treadmill!
Read more about us pups as your ‘best exercise equipment’ in Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine’s newsletter Your Dog!
Love, Labby

Sweet Buddy heard through the "Lab grapevine" that Peg's house was a great place to go to experience the foster dog good life, so he signed right up to bunk there until his forever family came along.
Being a wise and sensible fellow, whose nine years of dogging around had taught him to know a good thing when he sees it, Buddy quickly knew he had just found the perfect place to hang his leash forever. When his foster family realized that life is even sweeter with another buddy in it, everyone agreed that this Buddy was already home.
Peg sent us an update shortly after her new boy joined the family:
“Buddy (black Lab) arrived at my home as a foster but quickly claimed ownership to his corner. He was blind from diabetes but always kind of knew where the tennis balls were. He would listen for the ball "plop" and pick it up leaving Chester (yellow Lab) wondering what had just happened. He received cataract surgery, and all of a sudden he could see and was even quicker grabbing the balls before the 'plop.' The solution? Two balls."
She added, "Below is a photo of Buddy with his new BFF. Although Chester may not agree, the rest of us were convinced by his gentle nature that we had to be a foster failure household.
Welcome home Buddy!"

Volunteer Spotlight: Connie Fredman
|
|
Connie Fredman is a most extraordinary volunteer! Proprietor of Canine Health Resort in Fort Collins, Connie cares expertly for dogs recovering from major medical treatments and traumas - many from Colorado State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. Receiving care at Connie’s home, rather than a hospital, reduces stress on the dogs and speeds their recovery time.
Safe Harbor is fortunate to have Connie helping us as a medical foster. She cares for our Labs with serious or challenging medical issues that need expert management. Connie particularly enjoys working our morbidly obese Labs to get them to a healthy weight before adoption . . . many have lost as much as 50-60 pounds in her care!
|
|
It’s truly "Lab heaven" at Connie's house with 74 acres and a huge pond - a Lab favorite - for daily swims in fair weather.
Compassion, dedication and humor are the words that come to mind when we think of Connie. No matter how naughty or poorly a pup is feeling, she always has an update with kind words and hope for a speedy recovery for our Labs that need special care. In fact, Connie has fallen in love with and adopted several of her Safe Harbor special needs fosters over the years, including Deacon her current resident “foster failure.”
Visit Connie and her gang at her Canine Health Resort. You can also read more in SHLR supporter Cary Unkelbach's blog, Haven for Healing: Canine Health Resort. The pictures will surely touch your heart and speak volumes about what a remarkable woman Connie is and how honored Safe Harbor is to have her as a foster mom.
