Chair’s Message

Hello and Happy November!

Thank you to all of you who responded to this year’s lake survey - the largest of its kind in Canada! The results were presented via a live webinar with the research firm Earnscliffe Strategies. Over 350 cottagers joined us as Greg and Allan of Earnscliffe presented the evolving views of cottagers. They began by painting a picture of the typical cottage where three generations come together to connect with family and nature in an idyllic lake experience. There was overwhelming consensus that what brings the most joy was sitting on the dock, enjoying the simple pleasures of nature and spending time with loved ones. Top concerns were when that happy experience was jeopardized with a reduction of safety or excessive traffic on the water.

The survey results from over 7,100 respondents are a powerful tool in guiding the priorities of our work. We have met with and are working with our lake association stakeholders to develop further programs around the top issues. We look forward to sharing this with you in the spring. The full survey results are posted on our website here.

A special thank you to Mustang Survival and to all who participated in our fundraising contest. We look forward to seeing the winners on the water with their new stylish PFDs!

Warm regards,

Diana Piquette

Your Lakes, Your Views: What the 2025 Survey Tells Us About Life on the Lakes

Once every four years since 2013, Safe Quiet Lakes takes the pulse of Ontario’s lake communities—and the 2025 Your Lakes, Your Views survey is the most comprehensive yet. With more than 7,100 participants and over 160,000 words of comments, the message is clear: people care deeply about their lakes, their safety, and the experiences they share with family and friends.

The survey reveals that most lake users feel their time on the water is almost ideal. Lakes remain cherished places for connection across generations, whether through paddling, swimming, or simply enjoying nature. But the findings also highlight growing challenges that threaten that experience—especially noise, reckless boating, and increasingly powerful wake-generating technologies.

One of the most striking insights is the overwhelming consensus around responsibility. Across 90% of respondents, there is strong agreement that lakes should support mixed use, and that this requires courtesy, community norms, and appropriate enforcement. Respondents also overwhelmingly believe environmental stewardship is a shared responsibility—and that power boat operators hold an even greater role in ensuring safe coexistence on the water.

Concerns about wakes and noise continue to rise, but the survey points to practical, collaborative solutions. Many support designated distances from shore for wake activities and the expansion of no-wake zones. Education also emerges as a priority, particularly for renters and new lake users.

While a small group of power-boating enthusiasts holds very different views, the broader consensus is powerful. It shows a community aligned around protecting the lakes they love—and committed to solutions that keep them safe, quiet, and enjoyable for everyone.

A message from our partners at the Muskoka Lakes Association (MLA):

The Muskoka Lakes Association (MLA), as a Premiere Partner of Safe Quiet Lakes

(SQL), was pleased to work with SQL to distribute their 2025 survey to our members.

The results of the survey showed that over half of our members who responded feel that

fast, noisy boats are negatively affecting their cottage enjoyment. This aligns with what

our members told us in our 2024 survey. The most common reasons cited are:

  • Safety risks to near-shore swimmers and children and safety risks to paddlers

and other boaters due to wakes and boating practices

  • Impact of noise levels on ability to sleep, carry on a conversation and enjoy

nature

  • Concerns about shoreline erosion

We’re looking forward to collaborating with SQL on initiatives to promote boater

education about safe and responsible boating practices.

We build partnerships to encourage conversations about respectful boating and to lead change through education and advocacy. Your donation will help drive our programs.
