SRTS E-Newsletter

Welcome to Cross County Connection's South Jersey Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Newsletter! Through a partnership with the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Cross County Connection assists schools, school districts, and municipalities in South Jersey with developing fun and educational events and activities to enable and encourage children in grades K-8, including those with disabilities, to safely walk and bicycle to school. We also provide technical assistance with assessing the physical environment around schools and provide strategies to make it safer.

Grant Preparation for the Solicitation

Tips to Help You Complete Your Grant Application

SRTS GRANT SOLICITATIONS HAVE BEEN ANNOUNCED AND HIGH SCHOOLS ARE INCLUDED!

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) 2024 Safe Routes to School (SRTS) grant program is open. The application deadline is November 17, 2023.

SRTS grants are available for infrastructure projects that encourage and enable students to walk and bike safely to school. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) expanded the program to include high schools for the first time. Proposed infrastructure improvements must be within a two-mile radius of a K-12 school. The program is open to municipalities, counties, schools, and school districts.

Pre-Application Meetings are MANDATORY. This meeting ensures that the project is a good fit for the program. Pre-Application Meetings will be held from July 31, 2023, to September 29, 2023. Learn more and sign up here.

There will also be three opportunities to attend a webinar that will be helpful as you prepare your application. While this webinar is not mandatory, it is worthwhile attending. Webinar dates are:

·        August 10th, 10 AM - 11:30 AM

·        September 7th, 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM

·        October 4th, 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Register here.

Margate City

Margate City was awarded a SRTS grant in 2016. The project addressed three “problematic intersections” due to their confusing geometry and lack of pedestrian elements near the William H. Ross Elementary School and Eugene A. Tighe Middle School. The intersections were identified in a 2015 School Travel Plan Cross County Connection prepared for Margate.
