Bring on Summer!
We are so excited to be gearing up for a summer full of family-friendly activities. MCDOT will have lots of opportunities to talk about safety with the children in our community. We have many resources available via our Safe Routes to School program to promote safe and active walking and biking habits.

Keep an eye out for our tent at local fairs and festivals this summer and stop by to say hello and learn a few things about pedestrian and bicycle safety.

If there is anything we can do to support you or the children in your community during this time, do not hesitate to reach out. SRTS is a FREE program that provides pedestrian and bicycle safety education and outreach to residents of Montgomery County.

Bike to School Day was May 4

We celebrated Bike to School Day this year at Ritchie Park Elementary School in Rockville. There were 75 bike riders who had the chance to win a bike helmet in a raffle and take home other fun swag. Biking to school is a great option, especially in nice weather.

Virtual Safety Week
MCDOT's Safety Week was held May 16-21. Safety Week emphasized the need to be safe while traveling, whether by walking, biking, via bus, or other vehicles.

20 people who participated in the activities and submitted a photo were randomly chosen to receive a $15 Amazon gift card. View the winners and their activities here: Safety Week Winners 2022 | Flickr

Summer Outreach
HAWK Outreach

A HAWK (High-Intensity Activated crossWalK) signal, also known as a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon, is a traffic signal designed to help pedestrians safely cross busy streets.

This May, the Ped Safety Program conducted outreach to the residents of Randolph Road and Silver Spring to spread awareness about the newly activated HAWK signals.

A Weeklong Celebration at the Ag Fair

We can't wait to see you at the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair! Stop by our tent and learn more about ways to travel safely and spin our prize wheel. We are already getting excited for August!
Summer Bike Rodeo Tour

The SRTS team partnered with Montgomery County Recreation to conduct a 10-stop Bike Rodeo Tour in May and June. We educated more than 300 young people about the bicycle ABC's, Rules of the Road, Proper Helmet Fitting, and Communicating with Hand Signals.

Engineering Update
MCDOT's traffic safety program combines engineering and education throughout the community. The engineering team conducts Walkability Studies at schools throughout the county in order to ensure students can reach them safely.

Featured here is the work being completed near Westover Elementary School. Work includes relocating a new high visibility “continental” crosswalk marking to facilitate a safer pedestrian crossing at this intersection. The curbs were bumped out to slow vehicles and shorten the crossing distance and the new pedestrian ramps were designed and built to meet and exceed ADA requirements. This school crossing improves pedestrian operations to enhance safety for students walking and biking to school.
