Safe Routes to School Instruction Back in Full Rotation
We are proud to report that our traditional Safe Routes to School programming is back at essentially full capacity this summer/fall, after having had to cancel the in-school instruction for all of 2020 due to the pandemic, and having had to run a modified schedule this past spring. We're also excited to share that we're kicking-off another Walk/Bike-to-School Challenge for the month of October, which includes National Walk to School Day on October 6th. Students in participating schools will be challenged to walk/ride as many days as they can. We hope to have comparable participation to our Spring Challenge.
Safe Routes to School in Spanish
Bike Fort Collins is excited to share the work it has been doing in partnership with the Larimer County Department of Health and the Built Environment. We not only created a Spanish Bicycle Resource webpage covering topics such as how to find the right bike, safe riding resources, and bike safety for kids, but we've created videos voiced-over in Spanish and shot from a rider's POV demonstrating safe routes to area middle schools, all with the goal of helping lower inhibitions or concerns with students riding their bikes to school. In shooting the safe route videos, we also discovered and make a case for the need to improve bicycle routes to schools and even other destinations. READ MORE
2nd Annual Wish for Wheels FoCo - 10 Days Left
Only 10 days left to help support our effort to bring a new bike and helmet to every second-grader in Poudre School District’s six (6) Title 1 schools this fall. That's 400 bikes! These schools have a high percentage of students on the Federal Free or Reduced Lunch Program. For many of the recipients, these bikes are their "first" bikes. Remember your first bike? Help us get bikes to these kids and get them on a path to making bicycling a lifelong activity. LEARN MORE
A big thank you to the following companies for their contributions of 10 or more bikes toward our goal, and their plans for employees to help assemble on October 10:
Intersection / Facility Focus
For this month's intersection/facility focus we look at the intersection of Remington Street and Prospect Street. Remington is a major North/South connector for bike commuters, with Prospect creating a significant boundary between downtown and mid-town Fort Collins. What has your experience been at this intersection? Do you feel safe crossing over Prospect when traveling the Remington Bikeway/bike lane? Have you had near miss encounters here? Do you have ideas for how this intersection could be improved? Your voice matters!
In our August issue, we conducted the same survey and posed the same questions for recent infrastructure improvements at the intersection of Mulberry Street and Remington Street. Thank you to those who responded. READ RESULTS SUMMARY
You Know Me. I Ride a Bike. - Kristen Arnold
Sitting down with Kristen Arnold on her final day of intervals for the season and, in fact, her racing career, was a timely opportunity to reflect on her past 6 years of professional racing and where she aims to go from here. A professional road cyclist and registered dietitian/sports nutritionist, Kristen enjoys the bike-loving community she has found since moving to Fort Collins two years ago and has quickly sunk her roots deep in the two wheeled culture that puts our town on the map.

Not having been involved in sports as a child, Kristen stumbled into the world of cycling at the urging of a family she babysat for. They loaned her bikes and took her on rides and it wasn’t too long before Kristen’s latent athletic talent bubbled to the surface. READ MORE
2021 Tour de Farms Sells Out
With the return of Tour de Farms for 2021, Bike Fort Collins welcomed back many familiar faces and celebrated the new friends we made along the way. Extra support from our sponsors, HSD Law, Recycled Cycles, Ottercares, and Stodgy Brewing Company meant that we were able to bring a quality event to our participants while also building financial backing for the essential programs and services we offer the community throughout the year. Different from year’s past, a late summer date meant there was the smallest hint of fall in the air and the promise of harvest time just around the corner. A sold-out crew of folx on bikes left Stodgy on the morning of September 19th enroute to some of the best urban farms in Fort Collins. The 28-ish mile route followed many of our city’s low-stress bike routes and paths, but also highlighted some necessary bicycle infrastructure improvements for an even more bicycle friendly Fort Collins future. READ MORE

Community Input Needed
Bicycle Friendly Community - Pursuit of Diamond Designation
While the City of Fort Collins has applied for and proudly been re-designated as a Platinum Bicycle Friendly Community with the League of American Bicyclists (one of only five in the country), we ambitiously want to be the first city to earn Diamond-level designation. To that end, the city recently submitted that application, and as part of the review process the League needs and want your input. Please take a minute to complete their survey and share the link with any/all you know who cherish our bicycle community asking them to share their input too.
Rule Revision to Establish GHG Pollution Reduction Planning Levels
As we initially shared last month, CDOT on behalf of the Transportation Commission of Colorado has filed a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking with the Secretary of State to consider revisions to the rules governing the statewide transportation planning process and transportation planning regions regions, particularly to establish a new standard to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) pollution from the transportation sector in order to improve air quality, reduce smog, and provide more sustainable options for travelers across Colorado. They are inviting community input via hearings today and there's still time to submit input in writing (Deadline October 15). READ MORE
