Safeguarding Isn't Static-

Are You Evolving With It?

We often say at Plan to Protect® that we don’t know what we don’t know, but in the world of safeguarding, what we don't know can leave the most vulnerable at risk. As we look toward 2026, we are leaning into a values-based perspective that recognizes safeguarding is never static—it is a living, breathing commitment that evolves alongside new laws, emerging digital threats, and deepening our understanding of our people. I believe that staying 'current' isn't just about compliance; it's about a culture of Life-Long Learning that sharpens our judgment and fuels our empathy. This year, as I work toward my personal goal of reading 60 books, I’m reminded that every new insight is a tool we can use to better protect those in our care.

My Current Reading List

When we approach autistic individuals with empathy, patience, and genuine curiosity, we open the door to deeper connections, richer experiences, and a society that embraces neurodiversity in all its forms".

This book was recommended to me during an investigation where neurodiversity came into play. Autism played a part in the initial abuse and also in managing the response, at times missing the knowledge and awareness of how best to respond. So much pain could have been avoided if there were a deeper knowledge and empathy for autism.

“So much work remains. So much evil to fight. So much healing to reach for. So may wounded to love. Consider this your invitation to join in that work. To do what is right, no matter the cost. To hold to the straight line in the midst of the battle. To define your success by faithfulness and the choices you make. The darkness is there, and we cannot ignore it. But we can let it point us to the light.”

I am reading this for the 2nd time - it's so good. This is a memoir by Rachael Denhollander, the first victim to publicly accuse former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar of sexual abuse.

At Plan to Protect®, lifelong learning is one of our core safeguarding values.

Why? Because protecting people well requires more than meeting minimum standards — it requires ongoing growth, awareness, and vigilance.

Discover why lifelong learning is essential to safer organizations.

“One of the biggest challenges we faced with keeping our volunteers current is chasing them down for their police record checks. It was so labour-intensive! I absolutely love screening online with Canpro! It is easy for me to navigate. My volunteers receive the invite to grant permission for their criminal record checks, they provide their identification, and we are good to go! I even get the approved check back in just a few hours, if not minutes. I love it, and am happy to recommend it. I also have the peace of mind that the data is stored in Canada.”
