A Message from the District Attorney...

Dear Friends and Neighbors:

Yesterday, my office hosted a school safety symposium at the courthouse, inviting stakeholders within the education system from across Westchester County to discuss the issues most acutely affecting our student population.

Those in attendance included over 150 superintendents, principals, school resource officers, police chiefs and commissioners, counselors, social workers and security coordinators.

Administrators from both public and private schools were represented, spanning every portion of our county, from Yonkers to Yorktown.

Attendees heard presentations from Andy Grascia, our chief criminal investigator, on student drug and alcohol usage, from Laura Forbes, chief of our Child Sexual Abuse Material Bureau, on protecting students online and on mobile apps, and from Christine Hatfield, co-chief of the Special Prosecutions Division, on confronting physical and sexual abuse of children.

Two of our deputy chief criminal investigators, Wade Hardy and Joseph Monaco, led a round-table discussion where attendees voiced their own concerns and strategies regarding student safety.

This first-of-its-kind symposium is the start of my administration's efforts to unify our response to student abuse and exploitation.

This year alone, we have heard disturbing allegations involving student victims, including cases where students have allegedly been subjected to sexual abuse, sextortion, verbal abuse, harassment and other predations.

This week's meeting was designed to kick off a new era of coordination and cooperation among my office, the school districts and local law enforcement, to ensure we are all acting in concert to achieve student safety. My office is also soliciting direct feedback from the school districts, so that they have all the resources they need to protect their students.

The feedback to this symposium was overwhelmingly positive, and I was impressed by the commitment shown by our school district leaders toward pursuing student safety.

Please check out photos from the event on our Flickr page, linked here.

My community affairs team at the DA's Office offers regular presentations to schools and community groups regarding a range of public safety topics, including internet and social media safety, teen safety, surviving sexual assault, healthy relationships and safe driving. If you would like our office to deliver a presentation to your institution, or to learn more about any of these programs, please contact our community affairs team at communityoutreach@westchesterda.net.

I am confident that these renewed partnerships will bear fruit and that enhanced coordination between law enforcement and our schools will lead to better outcomes for all involved. At the end of the day, our kids are our most precious resource, and we must do all we can to help them thrive.

As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns, and I look forward to hearing from you.

In friendship,
