Pro Fishing Tip from Chris
"We're really fortunate to have incredible fishing opportunities all around us in Vermont, and are literally minutes away from some world-class fisheries, such as Lake Champlain. It doesn't matter if you prefer to target bass, trout, pike or any other species, there is incredible species diversity in Vermont.

For mid-summer fishing, water temperatures can be high and fish can be a bit sluggish at times and not overly aggressive. When I encounter these types of tough conditions, I often downsize my line and lure, fish slower, and spend most of my time fishing right on the bottom, presenting the bait as naturally as possible to the fish around any cover that creates shade and habitat for the fish to hold on - whether its say weeds, docks or ledges for bass in a lake, or boulders, overhanging branches or undercut banks for trout in a stream, as a few examples.

While I fish primarily for bass, many of the same concepts can apply to other species. At the end of the day, fish need quality habitat and food, and fishing slower with finesse tactics in the heat of summer can really pay off."

Annual Safety Award
Announcement!
As we mentioned in last week's newsletter, Safety Day has been indefinitely postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions.

So this year, we will be honoring our annual Safety Award Winner in a new way.

We will be presenting the award at a barbecue held at the winner’s work location on 9/18/2020 with all their crew!

The selected employee will receive one-on-one assistance from Casella Construction's travel agent to set up a fun, paid-in-full, 3-day weekend getaway for the winner and a guest! The Friday of the scheduled trip will be a PAID DAY OFF.
The winner of the Annual Safety Award will be an employee who has displayed an outstanding safety performance and has met the following criteria:

  1. Must have submitted a least one Good Catch or a Near Miss for the year;
  2. Has had no accidents in the past year;
  3. Has displayed the ability to lead by example while no one is watching;
  4. Has demonstrated our Safety Culture to other employees; and
  5. Is a Leader in Safety.
If you don't meet the criteria - there's still time! The selection will be made in September.

Good luck everyone!

Be on the lookout at your jobsite on September 18, 2020 to see who won our Annual Safety Award!
July Good Catch Winner of the Month
Congrats, Kenneth Brewer!
While spotting for the excavator digging in a trench on Astrchan Drive in Bennington, Kenneth alerted the operator when he noticed potential underground utilities.

The excavator was able to stop digging in time and avoided disturbing/damaging the utilities.
Great work Kenneth! Enjoy your $100 gift card!
Spotter Responsibilities
Spotters are required any time a piece of equipment needs to operate around any hazard including:

  • Powerlines
  • Congested Areas
  • Traffic
  • Pedestrians

It is the spotter’s job to assist the operator in maintaining a safe distance from hazards. In the event a spotter is required to leave the site, or is unable to perform their responsibilities, they must make the operator aware and activity must stop until the spotter returns.
Safe Distances
The safe distance to keep from powerlines is dependent upon the number of kilovolts (kV) running through the line. If you are not certain of the safe distance, then it is your responsibility to find that information before allowing an operator to begin work.
If there is any doubt that a safe distance can be kept from overhead lines, you should stop and seek alternative methods to complete your task.

A Spartan Thank You!
We recently put together a team to participate in last week's Castleton Golf Classic, and had a great time supporting the school's athletics program.

Courtney Widli, Castleton's Director of Development and Alumni Affairs sent along a nice message for our team:

"I just wanted to pass along a sincere thank you for joining us at this year’s annual Castleton Golf Classic!

We greatly appreciate the long-standing support that we receive from Casella Construction. This year’s event marks more than $500,000 that has been raised through this event for our athletics program, helping to advance the experiences and educational journey of our student-athletes.

Wishing the Casella Construction team (my husband included) a busy fall season. Stay well and we hope to see you again next year!"
