Be deliberate when being Safe: Hazards and risks are around us everyday and everywhere, whether we decide to notice them or not. Be present and be in the moment.

Protecting Workers From Heat Stress

Prolonged exposure to high-heat environments can lead to illness and death. The most serious heat illness is heat stroke. Other heat illnesses, such as heat exhaustion, heat cramps and heat rash, should also be avoided.

Summer Safety Series Tip #3: Don't Let the Bugs Bite

Spending time outdoors can bring you in close contact with mosquitoes and ticks. Mosquitoes and ticks are hungry, and they think you're dinner. Protect yourself from insect-borne diseases such as West Nile Virus and Lyme Disease, by considering the following safety tips:

  • If you find a tick, don’t panic and do avoid folklore remedies, such as “painting” the tick with nail polish. Instead, use fine-tipped tweezers to remove the tick.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and clothing treated with permethrin.
  • Use an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent. When used as directed, EPA-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
