Cari's Safety Corner

Q: Are there any lasting effects of covid on your building/facilities?

Protections that were added during covid times may have

been removed with only memories, while some have

become permanent. Many of these items could impact your

emergency systems and fire prevention. For example,

sneeze shields that often were hung from the ceilings can

change air flow affecting smoke detection and HVAC. They

also impede the effectiveness of sprinklers. They act the

same way as stacking a shelf too high. The mousetrap mazes

that were set up to separate incoming and outgoing

employees or the dividers for workstations could impair the

paths of emergency egress.

A few tips to ensure effective fire prevention:

 Walk through the entire facility paying special attention to items put in place during covid and consider how they may affect your fire systems

 Walk the exit paths and ensure nothing is in the aisles or blocking the doors

 Make sure the exit doors are functional

 Keep sanitizing (flammable) liquids away from ignition sources

 Check that all employees are trained on emergency exit procedures and fire

extinguishers
