Tying it All Together: Life Safety, Color & Means of Egress
Dave Tabar recently joined ShieldMark Inc. as Innovative Safety Solutions Director. ShieldMark Inc. manufactures and distributes Mighty Line® floor tape and signs, whose industrial floor tapes are known widely as “The Most Durable Tape.”
Dave retired several years ago as Global Director of Safety for The Sherwin-Williams Company, headquartered in Cleveland where he worked for 33 years. Dave’s managerial and technical expertise includes occupational safety & health, process safety management, industrial fire protection, life-safety, chemical safety & security, product/packaging safety, insurance, regulatory compliance, and legal support. Prior to Sherwin-Williams he worked as an Industrial Safety Consultant for the Industrial Commission of Ohio, Division of Safety & Hygiene. Dave holds a B.A. in Psychology and an MBA in Systems Management from Baldwin-Wallace College. He earned his CSP early in his career.
In one project at Sherwin-Williams, Dave worked to brainstorm, develop, fund and implement a global operational risk control system known as Project MIRA involving management of change, incident management, risk analysis and audit management, with enterprise action tracking. Dave was also responsible for leading Sherwin-Williams’ Chemical Facility Anti-terrorism efforts, developing a new chemical tracking database, and providing public testimony on Capitol Hill on behalf of the coatings industry. He also led many investigations throughout his career.
Dave is a prior Technical Committee Member on NFPA 30 Flammable & Combustible Liquids Code (Containers and Portable Tanks), NFPA 30B Aerosol Products Code, and the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code (Industrial and Mercantile) Committees. He presently sits as a Special Expert on NFPA 140, Standard on Motion Picture and Television Production. Dave has led numerous national and internationally-recognized fire research projects for storage and protection of flammable liquids involving both large and small-scale fire research at FMGlobal, UL, and Southwest Research Institute. He previously chaired the AIChE’s Center for Chemical Process Safety’s publication titled Guidelines for Safe Warehousing of Chemicals.
Dave is a long-time Ohio resident who enjoys people, travel, manufacturing, and business management systems. He is also an avid music composer and producer, having recently produced a short rock opera that was performed at the Cleveland Public Theatre in 2023. His record label is Blackpool Records® and his performing band is known as Stellarworld®.
