Chapter 5 of the Caltrans Safety Manual provides information for employees who work in an office environment who need to be aware of risks they may encounter in order to avoid injury. Information covered in this chapter includes Office Safety, Field Trip Safety, Physical Safety, and more.

Ergonomics

Chapter 7 of the Caltrans Safety Manual introduces and promotes ergonomics for the work environment and equipment that are compatible with the physical characteristics of the employee.  This chapter includes information on proper lifting techniques.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Chapter 12 of the Caltrans Safety Manual provides information about specific items and categories of PPE used to protect and shield employees from injury or illness.  PPE is required to be worn by all employees when in the field.

Prescription Safety Glass Program (PSG)

Chapter 12, Section 12.06, of the Caltrans Safety Manual covers eye protection with details on the Prescription Safety Glass Program, including eligibility requirements. The District 3 Mailroom has a box of prescription eyeglass frames available for you to try on frames prior to submitting your order, the box of frames must remain in the Mailroom.

Heat Illness Prevention - Chapter 23

As the weather warms up, it is important to review the Heat Illness Prevention chapter of the Safety Manual. Be proactive and familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of heat illness and know what to do if you observe any signs in yourself or your coworkers.


Remember your water.

1 quart per hour per employee!

The Safety Manual defines a "heat wave" as any day in which the predicted high temperature for the day will be at least 80 degrees Fahrenheit and at least ten degrees Fahrenheit higher than the average high daily temperature in the preceding five days.

Mild Heat Illness

(Prickly Heat & Heat Cramps)

Moderate Heat Illness

(Heat Exhaustion)

Severe Heat Illness

(Heat Stroke)
