Engagement is not a yes or no. It’s a spectrum. On one end is Disdain. People actively resist. Then Apathy and Uninterested. The neutral middle is Present: autopilot, paycheck.
On the other end is Shared Ownership: intentional belonging, where peers protect the standard and take responsibility for outcomes together. Between those ends are the steps: Interested, Buy-In, Willing Participation, and Self-Ownership.
Here’s the leadership mistake. We use one tactic for everyone. Bagels don’t move Disdain. Slogans don’t create Shared Ownership.
This week, choose one safety focus. Ask your team where they sit on the Engagement Spectrum for it, and what would move them one step to the right. Then act on what you hear.
