Safety Share: Chemical Mixing Incident

Recently, a janitor unintentionally mixed cleaning products, which produced chlorine gas. The worker recognized the hazard quickly and evacuated the area, preventing injury. This situation highlighted how dangerous chemical reactions could occur when cleaning products were mixed improperly.

 

Immediate action was taken. A toolbox talk was conducted with cleaning staff, focusing on WHMIS labelling, training, and the importance of reviewing Safety Data Sheets (SDSs). The company also developed a site-specific WHMIS program for cleaners across all dealerships, which was included in orientation and supported with real-life examples.

 

This Safety Share reinforced the importance of task-specific WHMIS training when working with hazardous products.

Zero Emission Vehicle Awareness Training Pilot

MSA has partnered with THRSC (Trucking Human Resources Sector Council) to offer members limited-time access to the Zero Emission Vehicle Awareness Training (ZEV-AT) through the MSA SkillsPass Training Portal. This free, self-paced online course (about 2 hours) is available to help drivers, technicians, owners, and managers build knowledge about zero-emission vehicles and the future of transportation. Training must be completed by March 31.
