Recently, a janitor unintentionally mixed cleaning products, which produced chlorine gas. The worker recognized the hazard quickly and evacuated the area, preventing injury. This situation highlighted how dangerous chemical reactions could occur when cleaning products were mixed improperly.
Immediate action was taken. A toolbox talk was conducted with cleaning staff, focusing on WHMIS labelling, training, and the importance of reviewing Safety Data Sheets (SDSs). The company also developed a site-specific WHMIS program for cleaners across all dealerships, which was included in orientation and supported with real-life examples.
This Safety Share reinforced the importance of task-specific WHMIS training when working with hazardous products.
