Safety Share: Overhead Door Spring Failure

An MSA member recently shared that an overhead door spring failed while the door was fully open, causing the door to suddenly close. Fortunately, no one was injured.

The overhead doors had recently been professionally inspected; however, spring failures can be difficult to predict, even with regular maintenance.

The member had a policy in place prohibiting employees from walking beneath overhead doors and directing foot traffic through designated pedestrian doors. This control helped prevent a potentially serious incident.

Safety Reminders:

• Inspect and maintain overhead doors regularly.
• Never walk beneath an overhead door when a pedestrian door is available.
• Report unusual door movement or noises immediately.
• Replace springs and other components as recommended by the manufacturer.

An updated Respiratory Protection Safety Essentials course is now available on SkillsPass.

If you've already started the current Respiratory Protection Training course on SkillsPass, you have until July 31 to complete it. After this date, the course will be archived, and any incomplete progress will be lost.

If you prefer, you can enroll in the new SkillsPass course at any time. Please note that you will need to start from the beginning, as progress cannot be transferred between courses.
