April 2022 Issue
Safety Stop Becomes State Law
Governor Polis officially signed the Safety Stop into law on April 13, 2022! This new, ground breaking legislation means that a cyclist, 15 years of age or older, may legally treat a stop sign as yield and a stop light as a stop sign. Data shows that the Safety Stop is highly effective in reducing bicycle crashes at intersections where the majority of these interactions occur. Bike Fort Collins has been closely following the progress of the Safety Stop throughout the 2022 legislative session and we are immensely grateful to the passionate policy folks over at Bicycle Colorado for all they do.

HSD Safety Stop Highlight
HSD Law also has some light to shed on the new Safety Stop legislation:

While the new law codifies an existing practice followed by most cyclists, cyclists should remain vigilant in following the new law as educating motorists of the new law and its intricacies is expected to take some time. What can you do as a cyclist to stay safe while the public gets “up to speed” on the Colorado Safety Stop Law?

  • Educate yourself on the new law by reading its text and considering how it applies to your daily route;
  • Remain vigilant and assume for the next several months that motorists may not be educated on the change in the law, and;
  • When in doubt yield the right of way to avoid a collision- it is still your responsibility to maintain a proper lookout when entering an intersection.

Fellow cyclists, we can work together to educate friends and family to ensure that all are safe on the Colorado roads. READ MORE
IMPROVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUART, STOVER AND WELCH PRESENTED TO BAC
BFC is now on an approx. quarterly schedule of presenting improvement opportunities to the City’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC). Having done so several times already, BFC was appreciative of the opportunity to present the following three infrastructure/intersection improvement opportunities to the BAC this past Monday (April 25).

Two of the three featured intersections were also recently featured (December 2021) as part of our monthly Intersection-Facility Focus survey in The Pedal Post eNewsletter. Similar to previous presentations, we incorporated the results from the surveys into the presentation.

  • Prospect & Welch to Spring Creek
  • Stuart Street & Lemay Avenue Intersection
  • Prospect Road & Stover Street Offset Intersection

Intersection / Facility Focus - Inventory Survey
For this month's intersection/facility focus we are looking to our reader's to help us identify future areas of survey focus. By completing the short survey below you will help us identify areas of concern when navigating town by bike for fun, fitness, or transportation.
In our March issue, we conducted an intersection focus survey for Prospect Rd. and Mason Trail. Thank you to those who responded. READ RESULTS SUMMARY

Ride-Around-Town (RAT) Ride
May 11th

RAT Rides are advocacy rides with a heavy emphasis on fun. They are casually paced, designed to explore different areas across Fort Collins from a bicycle safety lens. Friendly, experienced ride leaders set a no drop, no attitude pace, and make frequent stops to smell the flowers and talk about road conditions, infrastructure, traffic volume, etc.

The next RAT Ride is scheduled for Wednesday, May 11th leaving from Rally King Brewing with a 5:30pm meetup and 5:45pm rollout.

Ride of Silence
May 18th

This year’s Ride of Silence will take place on Wednesday, May 18th. Gathering at Woverine Farm at 5:45pm for a 6:00pm rollout. During this casual paced, no-drop, one hour ride we will visit the site of both bicycle fatalities in 2021. At this time we will dedicate a ghost bike for each life senselessly lost to a motor vehicle. Ending at Wolverine Farm, we invite you to enjoy a beverage and join us upstairs for sharing and reflection.

Bike Prom
June 25th

This is the premier hijinks and hooligans event of the year for Bike Fort Collins! With special thanks to FoCo Bike Mob, the Bike Prom 2022 promises to be loud and proud with featured band, Gora Gora Orkestar, DJ Specific Heat, raffles, silent auction, digital projections and lots of dancing late into the night. Ticket platform soon to follow!

This month we want to highlight and thank Membership Business Partner: PEDEGO Electric Bikes

The best electric bike is the one that fits you best. The most important part of every Pedego isn’t some high-tech gadget or fancy bicycle component. It’s the person riding it! Pedego gives you the freedom to choose the perfect electric bike for your individual needs and personal taste.

With spring weather in full swing, now is the perfect time to stop by the Fort Collins Pedego location at 2407 S. College Ave! With a fully stocked inventory of rental and retail bikes, the options are endless.

And a Pedego highlight wouldn't be complete without a very special thanks for their support of Bike Fort Collins and (more specifically) their support of the following BFC events: Bicycle Film Festival, Bike Prom, and Tour de Farms
