Safety Topic - The Energy Wheel

2023 has had its challenges. As we continue to see tremendous growth, our exposure to STKY energies increases as well while we perform our work. The Energy Wheel is an essential tool within the capacity model that allows our crews to recognize hazards, set mitigations, and ask if there are more needed to avoid STKYa (Actual) events from occurring.

The Energy Wheel is a tool used by our crews while performing their daily job briefing (JTSA) to help them identify those energies present at the job site that will result in STKY events as a result of the release or transfer of energy that can’t be absorbed safely. The Energy Wheel assists our crews in recognizing sources of energy, discussing and determining controls needed, ultimately ensuring the Job Briefing process focuses on significant potential hazards (STKY) unique to each activity and job.

The Construction Industry Institute found that humans are only able to identify 45% of all workplace hazards, on average, at any given time. With the use of the energy wheel, studies have shown that when an energy-based hazard recognition approach is used, hazard recognition improves.

What are the energies on the Energy Wheel, and what do the symbols stand for?

The Capacity Model seeks to prevent incidents but understands that errors will occur and that we must build the capacity to safely recover from incidents. We also want to learn from previous failures, as well as successes, to continue to get better. Focusing on energy-based hazard recognition can yield an increased percentage of STKY hazards that exist on our worksites. The Energy Wheel is a tool that can be used effectively to identify STKY hazards before work and during changing work conditions.
