Alderman Reilly Reports

Safety Update

Alderman Reilly is extremely frustrated and disappointed with the ongoing violence in the 42nd Ward, which often occurs on or near a CTA Train station. In a recent meeting with Superintendent David Brown, the Alderman was promised that dedicated police details would be assigned to the Red Line and other CTA trains. This has yet to occur.

Please click here to read a letter the Alderman sent to Superintendent David Brown, following the incident that occurred at Chicago Avenue & State Street yesterday evening.

Alderman Reilly in the News

Alderman Reilly recently joined Rich Lenkov & Tina Martini of WGN Legal Face-Off (Alderman Reilly speaks at 22:00) and Steve Cochran of WLS-AM 890 Radio to discuss various hot topics affecting the 42nd Ward and the City of Chicago.

Casino Update

Earlier today, the Special Committee on the Chicago Casino met to further discuss the Bally’s Tribune casino proposal. The Committee was scheduled to take a vote today, but many aldermen believe the matter is being rushed too quickly and requires more time to review.

Alderman Reilly was pleased with Chairman Tunney’s decision to delay the vote today.  A number of aldermen continue to express concerns about the truncated public process, the veracity of the casino financial analysis, and the rush to approval. Alderman Reilly will continue to advocate on behalf of residents and vehemently oppose Bally’s permanent and temporary casino proposals. A recording of today’s meeting is available here

The Casino Committee will reconvene to continue this discussion and conduct a vote on Monday, May 23rd at 1:00 PM. A livestream of that meeting will be available here at that time.

Alderman Reilly Hosts Community Shred Day for 42nd Ward Residents

Alderman Reilly is hosting a Community Shred Day on Saturday, May 21, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The event will be held at the Ohio Place Dog Park located at 360 West Ohio Street.

Households are limited to two boxes and shredding materials will be accepted until the shred truck is full. Please remember to remove all paper clips, staples and other bindings.

A representative from Alderman Reilly’s Office will be present to address concerns or questions regarding city-related matters.

We look forward to seeing you at the Community Shred Day!

Ward Re-Map Update

This week, the City Council approved an ordinance authorizing a redistricting map for the City’s 50 wards. Based on 2020 Census Data, the 42nd Ward enjoyed dramatic growth in population - adding more than 30,000 more people. That population increase accounted for 58% of the City of Chicago’s entire population growth over the past decade. As a result, Alderman Reilly was required, by law, to reduce the population of the ward by nearly 30,000 people.

Alderman Reilly would prefer to continue representing all of the neighborhoods currently in the 42nd Ward - but given the need to reduce population - that simply could not happen.

Alderman Reilly Joined Governor J.B Pritzker for Signing of House Bill 1091

It is no secret that Chicago has been forced to deal with groups of organized criminals who have targeted retail establishments Downtown throughout the past several years, and Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx’s Office has been reluctant to prosecute retail theft under $1,000.

Alderman Reilly was pleased to join Governor J.B. Pritzker, Attorney General Kwame Raoul, state lawmakers, and others this morning for the signing of House Bill (HB) 1091.

HB 1091, otherwise known as INFORM Act, does the following:

  • Creates/defines the violation of organized retail crime and allows an individual to be charged as a ring leader if he/she recruits/organizes others to steal at least $300 from a retail store for the purpose of reselling those items
  • Requires third-party online marketplaces to implement stronger safeguards to prevent reselling of stolen goods on their platforms
  • Creates the organized retail Crime Enforcement Fund, which shall be used by the Attorney General’s Office to award grants to State’s Attorney’s offices and law enforcement agencies to investigate, indict, and prosecute violations of organized retail crime
  • Allows multiple jurisdictions to prosecute the entire crime

Additionally, the new state law allows organized retail crime to be prosecuted by the Attorney General via a Statewide Grand Jury. Please click here to read the legislation.

The Alderman would like to thank State Senator Suzy Glowiak Hilton (chief sponsor) and Representative Kam Bucker for leading the charge and sponsoring this legislation.
