I’d like to introduce you to Jenna Quinn. I met Jenna recently in Los Angeles while attending meetings for ECAP – Evangelical Council of Abuse Prevention. Jenna sits on the Board of Director for ECAP and is the author of
Pure In Heart
.
In a swift and breathtaking narrative,
Pure In Heart
tells the astonishing true story of how sixteen-year-old Jenna Quinn broke free from years of sexual abuse at the hands of a trusted family friend, church member and coach at her Christian school. After the painful effects of the abuse almost cost Jenna her life, she found the courage to tell her story. With actual court impact statements, this book gives the reader a clear picture of how sexual abuse begins, progresses, and affects so many innocent lives. In
Pure In Heart
, Jenna is transparent about her road to recovery and healing that eventually led to her greatest passion: protecting children from abuse.Jenna’s story answers the uncomfortable questions people have about child sexual abuse: How can a family not see the signs? What causes a child to keep silent for years? What resources and skills can we teach children to help them prevent or end abuse by speaking up?
I know along with Jenna, you join me in being concerned about the prevalence of child abuse. This is a great read while you are self-isolating. As you read this – you along with us, are self-isolating, in order to protect ourselves, and others from COVID-19. The world in a matter of weeks has raised up and come to the aid of the world to combat this pandemic.
I can’t help but wish that the world would take as strong of stand against child abuse. An epidemic that has injured significantly more individuals – 25% of the world’s population. COVID-19 is not primarily targeting our children but it is targeting the elderly and those that are vulnerable to disease. However, we are concerned that being self-isolated is raising the risk of abuse for those that are vulnerable. We have put together resources which will provide the professional development that you and your workers need to do activity within this new paradigm.
For a chance to win a copy of
Pure In Heart
, drop us an email and tell us what steps you are taking to train and equip your workers for such a time as this, during COVID-19.

Put On Your Oxygen Mask First: Emotional Health and Safety During a Pandemic
If you’ve ever flown on an airplane, you might recall hearing the flight attendant say the following words as part of health and safety procedures before takeoff: “In the unlikely event of an emergency, oxygen masks will automatically appear in front of you. Place it firmly over your nose and mouth, and breathe normally. If you’re traveling with a child or someone who requires assistance, secure your mask first and then assist the other person.”
To many, these words might seem rather counterintuitive: saving and caring for ourselves first sounds selfish. But, in reality, if you run out of oxygen yourself, you won’t be able to help those around you.
This principle turns out to be applicable to many other aspects of life –even this pandemic. For parents, caregivers and essential care workers especially, it may seem like your primary role today is to make sure those who are vulnerable are protected from the virus and taken care of during this outbreak. But it is of utmost importance that your own emotional health is protected in this process, too. By exercising due diligence when it comes to your own mental state, you will be able to more effectively care for the vulnerable in your care.
