Safety Spotlight – Preventing Struck-By Injuries

Last month, we covered information about how to identify struck-by hazards. Identifying these hazards allows us to put proper controls in place to prevent struck-by incidents and reduce injury risk to workers. Examples of hazard controls that may reduce struck-by hazards at a worksite include:

  • Good housekeeping practices can eliminate some struck-by hazards by ensuring heavy items and equipment are not stored at heights.

  • Switch a piece of equipment or task for one that has lower risk, such as using a scissor lift rather than a ladder that could be struck and knocked over.

  • Using engineering controls such as tethers to secure tools when working at heights to avoid dropping them onto workers below.

  • Administrative controls could include creating a training policy to ensure workers are trained on the care and maintenance of tools and equipment.

  • Be sure that personal protective equipment (PPE) is available for any worker or task that is still at risk for struck-by incidents, such as high-visibility vests for worksites with moving vehicles or equipment.

For more information on preventing struck-by incidents, visit the Struck-By Safety Spotlight page.

How Visible Are You?

It’s that time of year again. The days are getting shorter, and as people’s summer vacations wrap up, our roads are getting busier. Here are a few important seasonal reminders:

  • Walking: Make sure you’re wearing easily visible apparel for the light conditions you’re walking in and pay attention when you’re crossing roads. Always ensure you are dressed for the weather with appropriate footwear and outerwear.

  • Driving: When you’re travelling during sunrise or sunset, make sure you’re driving slowly and, when appropriate, use visibility aids like sunglasses and sun visors.

Employers and supervisors, this is a great time to remind your workers about safe work practices for travelling to and from the workplace. It’s your responsibility to make sure that workers understand how to work safely, no matter the season.
