NEW: WORKERS’ RIGHTS CAMPAIGN

If there is one fundamental message that every worker needs to understand, it’s that they have rights and responsibilities when it comes to workplace safety. The WSCC has launched a campaign to help raise awareness of the Right to Know, the Right to Participate, and the Right to Refuse.

The campaign posters are available in 9 languages: English, Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, Inuvialuktun, Gwich’in, North Slavey, South Slavey, Tlicho, and French, and they’re available for free for your workplace.

To celebrate the launch of the campaign, WSCC is hosting the Safety Dance Video Contest to capture what safety looks like in Northern workplaces. Exciting prizes are available including a $1,000 Visa gift card for the Grand Prize. Learn more on our website.

Safety Spotlight

LIFTING & TWISTING

Lifting and twisting incidents happen when we use poor body mechanics to pick up or carry heavy objects. In 2024, roughly 1.2% of all injury claims to the WSCC were due to twisting and lifting incidents.

Examples of tasks that may cause a lift and twist injury include shovelling something heavy like gravel or snow, or carrying a heavy object and slipping, which causes the body to jerk to regain balance.

The top three occupations that are exposed to twisting and lifting hazards in the North are:

  • Janitors, caretakers, and building superintendents
  • Air transport ramp attendants
  • Construction trades helpers and labourers

Injuries from lifting and twisting incidents can be very painful, long-lasting, and debilitating. For more information on lifting and twisting incidents, including how to prevent them at your worksite, visit our Safety Spotlight page.

NWT EMPLOYER REPRESENTATIVE CALL

The WSCC is seeking two new employer representatives to join its Governance Council. This position is crucial for ensuring that the employer perspective is considered in the governance and strategic direction of the organization. GC members are appointed by the Minister with responsibility for workplace safety and serve as stewards of the WSCC. As both of these positions will be members of the Audit Committee, experience in accounting, financial management, audit or investment strategy will be considered an asset.

Interested candidates can learn more about this opportunity by visiting the Expressions of Interest page

Deadline for expressions of interest: October 24, 2025.
