Unprecedented Times

WSCC IS HERE FOR YOU

This summer has proved to be a trying time for Northerners. Some were evacuated from home communities, had business and supply chains disrupted, and may now be dealing with heavy mental loads and environmental uncertainty.

The WSCC is uniquely positioned across two territories and, because of this, our Iqaluit office was able to maintain critical functions during evacuations in the Northwest Territories. Both of our offices are operating as normal now. If you have any questions about impacts to your business, work, or your workers, please reach out to us at

1-800-661-0792 or at info@wscc.nt.ca.

Welcome to our new President & CEO

RICK HUNT JOINS THE WSCC

We are pleased to welcome Rick Hunt to the organization as President and CEO. Rick brings years of safety expertise and leadership experience to his new role and is a strong advocate for collaborative and supportive relationships across all organizational levels.

For the first time, the President & CEO of WSCC will be based in our Iqaluit office. A strong partnership between both territories is a key element in supporting the safety and care of workers in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. We look forward to Rick’s leadership through our current 5-year strategic cycle.

Supportive Conversations in the Workplace

As an employer, it can be difficult to know where to start in terms of having supportive conversations about mental health with workers. This can be especially true during and after an unprecedented emergency. Here are some questions to consider while preparing yourself to check in with workers on how they’re feeling:

  • Do you have the capacity for this conversation? Your mental health matters, too. Check in with yourself ahead of any supportive conversations. If you are having a bad day yourself, consider postponing conversations until you’re ready.

  • Do you have the time? Make sure you have time to commit to this conversation.

  • Are you prepared to listen? This goes along with making sure you have the time to focus on a potentially in-depth conversation. Truly listening is important for not just understanding your workers, but also shows respect.

Ready to have supportive conversations with workers? See Appendix A of WSCC’s resource Return to Work – Supporting Workers with Psychological Injuries and Illnesses for more guidance and information on having meaningful, supportive conversations for mental health in your workplace.
